Dr. Brodie Fleemore had one of the world's greatest scientific minds. Late one night while doing research in his lab, Dr. Fleemore made a costly error that resulted in a massive explosion. His lab was destroyed and all of his research had gone up in flames. His life had been changed forever. The fire department was able to put out the powerful blaze but there was no sign of Dr. Fleemore. That's because Brodie Fleemore didn't exist anymore. He had become DOCTOR ATOMIC!

Somehow Dr. Fleemore was able to survive a deadly explosion that really should've ended his life. The mix of potent chemicals and intense heat had transformed the mild-mannered biochemist into a new type of super-being. He soon discovered that he had developed a number of incredible powers. With blue skin, yellow eyes, and red, flaming hair, Dr. Fleemore was no longer human. He was superhuman. With his power, speed, and amazing intellect he could still serve mankind. But not as a scientist. No, Dr. Fleemore had turned this curse into a blessing by becoming Nova City's mightiest hero.

For nearly 30 years, Doctor Atomic kept the world safe battling supervillains from Earth and across the galaxy. After he saved the planet, Doctor Atomic would mysteriously disappear into the sky only to reappear whenever the people of Earth needed a savior. There were several stations across the globe where the people would shine a big bright light into the sky alerting the Doctor to potential threats. You'd think that being a superhero would be the coolest thing ever, but after so many years on the job it was being to lose its luster for Doctor Atomic.

Eventually Doctor Atomic began taking longer and longer responding to imminent threats in Nova City and around the world. Something was going on with the once universally revered superhero. But what was troubling the good Doctor? Many people began to notice that their hero had lost a step and didn't have the same energy he once brought to every crisis. Whatever he was going through, the people of Nova City needed him as they were faced with a potential disaster that threatened the entire planet. A massive asteroid was detected by NASA barreling towards Earth. The giant smoldering rock connected was on a collision course with the planet. And only one man could save the day.

After a bit of a delay, The Air Force was ready to shoot the asteroid out of the sky when Doctor Atomic finally appeared. He flew towards the asteroid with all his power and speed. The impact was so powerful that it created a blinding explosion and a loud boom. Many people were forced to shield their eyes from the dazzling light. In mere moments, the titanic asteroid had been reduced to a few pebbles which innocently fell to the ground below. People from every country wildly cheered for their hero. But there was no sign of Doctor Atomic. All that remained was a cloud of dark smoke where he had intercepted the asteroid. It appeared as though he had given his life for the people of Earth.

For the next few days the entire city seemed to be in a state of shock. Thousands of people turned out for Doctor Atomic's funeral even though they weren't really sure if he had survived the encounter with the asteroid. It appeared as though Doctor Atomic had vanished into thin air. Nova City, the Doctor's hometown, dedicated a gravestone in his honor. Eventually I worked up the nerve to visit my hero's final resting place and placed some flowers at the gravestone which was quickly becoming a shrine to our fallen hero. I lingered for a bit to collect my thoughts before I heading home. A soft warm breeze whispered through the trees. Actually, it sounded like it was whispering my name.

"Baxter" the voice called out repeatedly. "Who's there?" I called out. But as I looked around the cemetery, it was completely empty aside from a few squirrels scampering about. "Baxter" the voice repeated. This was starting to freak me out so I started to run. I looked back several times to see if anyone was following me. There was nobody there but the voice kept calling my name and it was getting louder each time. In my rush to flee the cemetery I tripped and tumbled into a freshly dug hole. It looked pretty shallow so I assumed I'd be able to climb out. I dug my fingers into the soil and tried to pull myself out of the hole but something grabbed my legs and brought me back down.

"Welcome to The Infinite Dimension!" Staring down at me was the giant face of a bearded man with freaky looking eyes. "Who are you?" "My name is Achilles Snout, the original Doctor Atomic. I was an alchemist in Medieval England where I had been working on the Elixir of Life, a potion that would give me eternal life and youth. At the same time, a marauding army of bandits ransacked my village. In my panic, I fell into the cauldron of chemicals I was concocting. It turned me into a superhuman being. With my new powers, I vanquished the bandits and dedicated my life to protecting the innocent. Since then there have been thousands of Doctor Atomics across the globe."
