


Sebastian visits the library every week with his class. He spends his time passively looking at book spines, randomly picking one to check out a minute before the bell rings. The book stays in his desk until the following week when he returns it unread. This week, his assignment is to read a historical fiction novel. He was told if he couldn't choose one on his own it would be chosen for him. Reading, you see, just isn't his thing.


Reading just isn't my thing, Mrs. Iuliani. I don't see the point in forcing kids to read.

Hmm....
Mrs. Iuliani, the school librarian, makes every effort to find Sebastian THE book that will get him excited about historical fiction. In speaking with Sebastian, Mrs. Iuliani surmises that part of Sebastian's apathy towards reading could be a result of the lack of autonomy he has been given to choose what interests him. Sebastian candidly spoke about how he has never seen the point of reading and that most of the books he's been "forced" to read have had nothing to do with his life. This is why reading, you see, just isn't his thing.


I like comics. My teacher last year told me graphic novels weren't real books.
