Penelope Parrot could not wait to try out for the jungle high marching band. Her mother, Mrs. Peggy Parrot, was excited for Penelope to play the flute just like she had.
All the giraffes tried out for the Brass Instruments: Tubas, French horns, trumpets, and trombones.

All the monkeys tried out for the percussion instruments: snare drum, xylophone, and cymbals.

All the birds tried out for the woodwind instruments: clarinets, flutes, saxophones, and piccolos.

Penelope had a different plan. She dreamed of playing the snare drum with the monkeys and receiving the next “Top Drummer Award.”

Penelope would sneak into the percussion room after school and practice the drums. She knew she had the same skills that the monkeys had.

Then, one day, Penelope worked up the courage to join the percussion section during class, so she headed to the back with the monkeys. The monkeys glared at her.

Maddox Monkey stopped Penelope before she could set her drum down. “The woodwind section is at the front. You must be lost,” he teased with his finger pointing to the other flutes while all the other monkeys laughed.

Penelope was embarrassed, so she threw her drum down and rushed out of the band room and sat alone in the hallway so no one would see that she was upset.

Eleanor Elephant, the band director, saw Penelope leave the room, so she went to the hallway to ask her why she was not practicing with the other birds.

“I’m sorry Ms. E, but I don’t want to practice with the birds,” Penelope hesitantly said. “I want to play the drums with the monkeys.” Penelope became quiet, afraid of what Ms. E might think.

To Penelope’s surprise, Ms. E replied, “If that is what you want to play then go right ahead.” This was good news to Penelope, but she was still overwhelmed by the monkey’s teasing. “The monkeys won't let me practice with them. They don’t think a bird can play percussion,” she explained.

Ms. E wiped the tears from Penelope’s face and looked her in the eyes. “March right back into the back of the band room and practice the drums. If Maddox Monkey or any other monkey tries to stop you, raise your beak high and keep practicing."
