When you write a persuasive essay, you are trying to convince someone of something.

For example, I could write about how dogs make excellent pets.

First, you have to pick a side and write your thesis statement. This statement should be found in your first and last paragraph.
For my example, I could say, "Dogs make excellent pets because they are fun to play with, they cheer you up, and they keep you in shape."

Next, you start your argument. This is where you state reasons why you chose the side you did.
You should have 3 arguments total in the body paragraphs.
Each argument should start by stating your opinion, followed by evidence to back it up.
For example...
Dogs are great pets to have because they are very fun to play with. I know this because I have a dog and I always have a lot of fun when we go outside and play fetch.
Another reason dogs are great pets is because they always cheer you up when you are sad. Every time I go home and I am feeling sad, my dog comes up to me and licks me and makes me happy again.
My last reason dogs are the best pets is they keep you in shape. Dogs need to be taken on walks a lot. When you take them on long walks, that helps you stay in shape and be healthy.
