Kingda Ka is the tallest roller coaster 

in the world which is 456 ft. or 139 m 

high. First of all it is located in 

Jackson, New Jersey. It is powered by 

hydraulic engine. It has a magnetic 

brake system to stop the coaster.   A 

machine launches it by 128 mph and 

goes up 456 ft.

When you see a roller coaster you will think that it looks 

scary and dangerous but actually its the safest ride in an 

amusement park because each day the safety engineer checks 

every inch of track to make sure if everything is safe. 

This is the mine train in Ocean park, Hong Kong. 

When I 12 years old I was so scared to ride mine 

train. Then my dad let me try and I didn't think it 

was fun. When I was 13 years old I went to Ocean 

Park and rode mine train again. I felt different. I 

thought it was a lot of fun. I started to like roller 

coasters until then.

*All of those roller coasters are inside amusement parks and the 

rides are free when buying the admission ticket to the park. 

Therefore, the cost per ride is an estimate only assuming that this 

ride would be a “stand alone” roller coaster.

2. Thinking/Inquiry/Problem Solving     How many 

minutes in average does it take for the safety stops between 

rides? 

There are 4 trains with 18 riders per train and the duration is 

0:28 in Kingda Ka roller coaster. There is 1400 riders/hour. 

Whenever you ride a roller coaster there is always a time for 

the riders to get off the train and to get in the train some of 

them even have a safety reminder before they start the roller 

coaster ride. 

3.Knowledge     Referring to question number 2. If the 

operator earns 90HKD per ride per person, how much would 

they earn per day if it’s a 12 hour operation and if each ride is 

in full capacity?

4.Application     What is the average number of riders per 

week/month/year when assuming the roller coaster is not 

always operating in full capacity?

The roller coaster needs maintenance half an hour a day, 

suppose there is rain for an hour. Sometimes the roller 

coaster is not in full capacity so let’s say that the roller 

coaster operates 70% of full capacity (That is 30% less).

5.Knowledge How much money does the 

operator earn if the roller coaster is not on full 

capacity (for example 70% of full capacity)?

1.     Busiest roller coaster:

You would think at first that Kingda Ka will have the most costumers 

because of its facts but actually it is the most expensive ride. Kingda Ka is 

more for young adults because the G-force is high, the maximum ascend 

and descend is 90°, the maximum speed is really fast and the height of the 

roller coaster is really high. Young adults will like to go on this ride because 

it’s more thrilling and adventurous but the disadvantage is the cost is 

expensive for one ride. 

Colossos is for all ages above 8 because the price is cheaper and it’s a 

wooden roller coaster so there are no loops only hills. It also delivers a 

different kind of thrill for it’s a wooden roller coaster, a thrill that is 

advisable for an average age of 8 years and above. The G-force is not that 

high but it is still very tall and the maximum ascend and descend is 61°.

The mine train in Ocean Park is more for families with children and all 

because the kind of thrill that this roller coaster brings is suitable for 

families for it is a mild roller coaster. The G-force is not high, the height is 

not that tall, and the maximum descend and ascend is only 60°. Also, the 

cost per ride is very affordable.
