Lincoln was born 

February 12, 1809.

Lincoln grew up in 

a poor family. His 

parents were 

farmers.

Lincoln was mostly 

self-educated. He 

taught himself 

everything he needed 

to know.

Lincoln successfully led the 

United States through its 

greatest constitutional, 

military, and moral crisis – 

the American Civil War.

Lincoln put an end to 

slavery. He also 

promoted economic 

and financial 

modernization. 

Lincoln became a country 

lawyer, a Whig Party leader, 

Illinois state legislator during 

the 1830's, and a one term 

member of the United States 

House of Representatives 

during the 1840's.

 Lincoln, a moderate from a swing 

state, secured the Republican Party 

presidential nomination in 1860. 

With almost no support in the 

South, Lincoln swept the North and 

was elected president in 1860.

Abraham Lincoln is elected 

the 16th president of the 

United States over a deeply 

divided Democratic Party, 

becoming the first 

Republican to win the 

presidency. 

Abraham lincoln

from March 4, 

1861 – April 15, 

1865.
