Player Positions: Teacher and Student Roles in a Culturally Responsive Classroom.
The teacher is the quarterback, the most important player on the field. They facilitate offensive and defensive players for effective culturally responsive teaching.
The teacher's role as the quarterback is essential to directing and modeling culturally responsive behaviors. Their position includes to REFLECT DIVERSE CULTURES in class. They must ENCOURAGE ALL STUDENTS TO SPEAK & WRITE IN A DIVERSE MANNER. Most importantly, teachers must ensure that NO SINGLE STORY IS TOLD.
ELL STUDENTS ROLE AS OFFENSIVE PLAYERS
English Language Learners are team players that can equally promote classroom diversity by:
Relating applicable cultural experiences to their own challenging situations.
Being culturally sensitive to others.
Talking respectfully and positively about cultural topics.
ESL STUDENTS ROLE AS DEFENSIVE PLAYERS
English as A Second Language Learners are equally team players that can promote classroom diversity by:
Being willing to share their experiences and backgrounds.
Inviting their family members to share information and artifacts from their country.
Not being afraid to express themselves & actively engage.
