Dedicated to me and my two cats (Pippa and Dorian) :P

Culturally Responsive Teaching is Effective Teaching (Krasnoff) and has five pillars or themes (Vacca, Vacca, Mraz):
- 1. Identity and Achievement
- 2. Equity and Excellence
- 3. Developmental Appropriateness
- 4. Teaching the Whole Child
- 5. Student-Teacher Relationships

In order to teach multicultural classrooms effectively, Transformative approach with project based learning needs to be implemented. For example, Chris Gable used the Sudan Famine and allowed his students to read and form their own opinions then create a project based on their findings.

Even Anita Crowley uses the Transformative approach with her SIOP science students by having them use class discussion to form their own ideas and thoughts then creating group presentations to synthesize what they've learned either into a poster of a Power Point presentation.

However, "teachers need to know themselves before they can teach their students" (Nieto) and this is because "most discrimination is unintentional."(Purdie-Vaughns)

In my classroom, I plan to use this Transformative approach with project based learning to create portfolios of students work to help them monitor their own progress and learning.

I say portfolios because they "encourage the integration of different types of summative and formative assessments." (Vacca, ect. all p. 93)
