How do I become a more effective educator?
- Incorporate Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Use various methods for assessment
Ms. Welch desperately wanted to become a better math teacher, so she did some research and came up with a list.
She started with her first bullet point, and broke it down, detailing actual strategies she could use in her classroom as soon as tomorrow!

Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Using Funds of Knowledge
Every student comes to class with their own background knowledge and experience with the content. Embrace their knowledge and use it in class (e.g. word problems, notes, discussion, etc.) so students will know that their contributions are valued.

Whenever my mom makes pizza, she cuts it into 6 slices, so we each get a piece. Does that have something to do with fractions Ms. Welch?

Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Provide Wait Time
Giving wait time allows every student the opportunity to come up with a response, without the pressure of having to do so immediately. It shows students that you want them to mull over the question and you care about what each of them are thinking, not just about which student raises their hand first.

Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Use Graphic Novels/
Picture Vocabulary
This is an effective strategy to use with all students, but most notably ELLs. It helps when students are able to associate content and vocabulary words with visuals.

Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Use Interactive Graphic
Organizers

The students take an active part in their instruction. Each is given/writes a word or concept to contribute to the graphic organizer. The final product becomes notes for the class.
