Squanto was a Native American. He was born around the year 1585 in the village of Patuxet. He was a Wampanoag. His real name was Tisquantum, but people called him Squanto.
In 1614, Captain Hunt kidnapped Squanto and took him to Spain where he sold him as a slave. But Squanto managed to escape and go to England.
Squanto returned to his Pawtuxet tribe after 5 years, but his people had all died of a terrible disease. Squanto went to live with another Wampanoag tribe, but he didn't feel at home.
In 1620, a group of settlers arrived in Patuxet. These Pilgrims had sailed from England to America to start a new life. The Wampanoag feared the settlers.
The first winter in the colony was long and cold. The Pilgrims were hungry and had no idea how to hunt, fish or plant crops. Many of them died then.
King Massasoit sent Squanto to speak to the English and find out what they planned to do. It was then that Squanto's role began. For the first time he felt he had something important to do!
