To my WLEL 475 peers and my future students

I want to go on a camping trip, but I don't know what to bring! I need to know how many items I should pack and how much stuff I should take!

Sounds like you need help with count and non-count nouns! I can help!

To help describe the individual items you need, we can use count nouns! Count nouns are things that we can count, like tents or water bottles. We can talk about them using numbers, like one water bottle, or using 'a' or 'an,' like a tent.

Excellent! To describe more than one count noun, we can use words like 'many' or 'a few.' You might need a few chairs, but you will need many batteries for your flashlight!
I also need a chair, but I might need more than one!

Of course! To do this, you will need non-count nouns, which are things that you can't count individually, like food and clothes. You can use the words like 'some' to say you need to pack some food and some clothes in your bag.
Now that I have a few items, I need to pack food and clothes, too!

I'm so excited! But I am also a bit nervous; this is my first time going camping!
To express large or small amounts with non-count nouns, you can use words like 'much' or 'a little.' It sounds like you have much excitement, but have a little nervousness.

Now my list is complete! You have given me much advice, and many things to think about. Who knew count and non-count nouns were so important?
Glad I could help you plan your list! I hope you have some fun and make many memories!
