The history of Haiti is very interesting. You are about to read about the history of Haiti as told through the perspective of a Haitian child.
Dear Diary,
Today mom told me the coolest story! She told me about the founding of our country. There were people called 'Taino' that were the first people to live in Haiti. Mom told me about a man named Christopher Columbus. He came here in 1492 and made Haiti a Spanish colony. That did not last very long.
In the 1600s, Haiti was involved in a war with slaves. The slaves won. Haiti was then a French colony. Mom told me all of this for a very important reason. Today is January 1, 1804. We gained our independence as a nation! Mom said a man by the name Toussaint L'Ouverture helped us in our fight for independence and will always be remembered for that. Today was a great day!
Folktales are extremely important to Haitian culture. Bouki tales are very popular. A Bouki is a foolish person, or someone who is easily confused. Bouki stories can teach people how to live and how to behave. These particular folktales are silly and teach people to not make the same mistakes as a Bouki would. The following article is about a Bouki.
February 3rd 1876 - BOUKI SPOTTING
Earlier today there was a Bouki story shared with the news. We are sharing with you all so that you do not make the same mistakes as the bouki. This particular bouki was riding a bike alongside the river when a man approached him and told him that if he seen a fish he may die! The bouki quickly closed his eyes and tried to ride his bike. This ended in him crashing into the river where not only did he see a fish but touched one. Bouki is so naive. Be careful folks! Do not make the same foolish mistakes as these Boukis!
