"Grandma always made you feel she had been waiting to see just you all day and now the day was complete." - Marcy DeMaree

Every year my family goes somewhere for summer vacation. But this year we were going somewhere extra special. I would be going to Italy to meet my Nonna for the very first time. This was going to be the greatest summer ever!

My Nonna was a sweet little old lady who lived in a tiny village in Sicily called Burgio. Based on the stories that my Mom had shared with me, my Nonna was an incredible woman. After my Nonno passed away, she continued to look after the house and their massive garden all by herself.

My Nonna is 75 years old, barely weighs 100 pounds and yet she is out there every morning at 5 o'clock working on her garden. She then insists of making us a huge dinner and still has time to create new content for TikTok. She is amazing!

Nonna never learned how to drive and doesn't know anyone who owns a car. Once or twice a week she takes her pet goat, Scaramucci to the city of Palermo to visit the market. I decided to go with her one morning and was exhausted by the time we got there. And yet my Nonna has been making this trip since she was a little girl.

When we arrived in town, it felt like the people were in awe of my Nonna. She's barely 5 feet tall and yet you could tell that everyone respected and possibly even feared her. We purchased our groceries and were getting ready to leave when two older boys approached me.

At first they were kinda charming but after awhile they were becoming a nuisance. They kept talking over one another in Italian and started to make me feel uncomfortable. My Nonna walked over and yelled at them in Italian. The boys were white as a ghost as they ran away from my Nonna.

On Sunday morning, Nonna began cooking at 6 a.m. Every Sunday she would have a big family dinner. It was so big that she invited the entire village to join us. There was so much food and it was all so delicious. I was stuffed but my Nonna keep shouting "Mangia! Mangia!" at me.

Even though I couldn't move from eating so much, I still managed to gobble down a couple of cannolis. As my Nonna began to clear off the table, there was a loud knock at the door. Who could it be? The entire village was already here. My Nonna turned down her beloved Johnny Panzerotti opera album and answered the door.

Standing at the door was a well-dressed man with a mustache. He was a wealthy businessman from Rome who told my Nonna that he was going to buy her village, demolish all the houses, and build a casino. Nonna was livid. I haven't seen her that angry since someone brought her a jar of Ragu to cook with. Big mistake.

The man's business card read, "Augusto Di Stefano,
Ricco Imprenditore." My Nonna tossed the card to the ground and then proceeded to give him "The Malocchio", the dreaded "Evil Eye." Mr. Di Stefano shook his head and laughed before getting into his Maserati. "Foolish old woman" he sneered before driving off.

The next morning a construction crew showed up at the crack of dawn. Di Stefano wasn't fooling around. He was ready to tear down this beautiful old village whether the residents liked it or not. As the trucks and other equipment started to move in, strange things began to magically occur.

Some of the machines became stuck in a giant pool of liquid that turned out to be tomato sauce. The rest of the machines were flipped over or sank into the sauce below. Frightened by the bizarre series of events, the rest of the construction crew ran away faster than if they had drank an entire gallon of Espresso.
