Chapter One- Sparkle
"Swipe your paws like this," Their mother was teaching them fighting moves. Sparkle and Shine copied the move perfectly. “Great,” Tiffany exclaimed. Shine said, “Momma, I wanna go sleep in the den.” Tiffany sighed, but there was a playful gleam in her eyes. "Ok," She said. "Why don't we all take a nap until your father gets back with the food?" Sparkle agreed instantly. They all fell fast asleep.
When their father got back with the food, Sparkle was overjoyed to see him. “Dad! Dad!” She called. She trotted over to him. “What did you catch?” She asked. “I’m starving!” “I caught a rabbit

and two mice.” Fire replied. “Enough to feed us for days!” Tiffany purred and twined her tail with her mate’s, praising his fantastic catch. Sparkle gulped down a bunch of the delicious meat, and her sister followed her. “Sparkle gets to hunt tomorrow,” Tiffany said. I get to hunt! Sparkle thought. Well, I guess I am the oldest, after all.
Chapter Two- Shine
Shine was outside, on top of their den. She relished the morning sunlight, and wouldn’t miss it for anything. Sparkle came out of the den and let out a big yawn. Shine stealthily crept over to the edge of the den and jumped. WHUMP! She landed right on top of Sparkle! “Mouse-brain! What were you thinking? You could have crushed me,” Meowed Sparkle angrily. “I just thought it’d be cool to finally get back at you for sticking a frog in my nest,” Answered Shine. “Why you- get back here!” Sparkle yelled as she chased Shine around the den. “Catch me if you can!” Shine mewed happily.
Shine was in the den, eating one of the stale mice when her sister came up to her. “Come on,” She said. “It’s time to go catch some squirrels!”
Chapter Three- Tiffany
Tiffany was lying on their Sunning Rock, with Fire beside her. “Look at our beautiful kits,” Fire said. “They will grow into fine spies one day,” Tiffany replied. “But how to tell them?” She got up and started to pad back to their den. “Fire, I’m getting older. I’m not as fit as I once was,” Tiffany said. “You’ll still live for many moons.” Fire told her. “But what if something happens to me? How will they know their history? How will they even know that they should be spies!... and the secret...” Tiffany merrowed to Fire. “No offense meant, but you can’t tell them! You don’t know as much about the spies as I do!” “Don’t worry.
Fire said. “Nothing bad will happen while I’m around, to you, or our kits.” Tiffany purred, then she and Fire fell fast asleep.
Chapter Four- Sparkle
“Where’s Mom!” Sparkle’s wail broke the silence. “Where is she!” Sparkle wailed. “She was right next to me when I fell asleep, and now she’s gone, and there’s strange cat-scent in her nest!” Fire’s pelt bushed out. They scoured the clearing for ages. Finally, their father said, “Kits, it should be your mother telling you this, not me. But we're under dire circumstances. Your mother is a spy! Once upon a time, I was her recruit, now her mate. Spying is in your blood. I am so sorry for keeping this from you. We were planning to tell you. I hope you can forgive me.” Sparkle’s thoughts swam. What! Should I even be here right now? Is this where I belong? Am I supposed to be a
spy? How can I ever trust my father again? What else is he keeping from me? Sparkle woke curled in her mossy nest. Apparently, she had blacked out when she heard that she was a spy. The night suddenly came back, Her mom missing, them spies, he father, more scared than he had ever been, the strange yet familiar cat-scent in her mother’s nest. It was all too much. She curled back up in her nest and let the darkness engulf her once more.
Chapter Five- Shine
Shine was asleep, curled up next to Sparkle. She was dreaming. Shine couldn't believe it. In her dream, she saw her mother, standing beside a tom she couldn't recognize. Shine woke with a start.
“I think I know who took mom!” Shine exclaimed. Fire rushed toward her. “Who?!” “I-I don’t know his name.” Shine stuttered. “All I could tell was that it was a tom.” Fire’s pelt bushed out. Whether it was in fear or anger, Shine couldn’t tell. Shine was frightened now, as was Sparkle, although she tried not to show it, the look in her eyes made Shine shiver with dread. Her sister was never scared. Shine crept back to her den, falling back asleep,
hoping to dream of her mother once more.
Chapter 6- Tiffany
Tiffany groggily shook out her pelt. Something was wrong. She blinked and opened her eyes. This wasn't her home! "Where are you, Fire!" She yowled. A meow came from behind her. "Not anywhere near here." The strange tabby tom said with a purr. "Who are you?" Tiffany asked. She was starting to think that there was something familiar about the strange tom. "My name is Treeheart." Tiffany gasped. "B-b-but that's the name of my mom's mate!" She meowed. "What was your mother's name?" He asked. "Solstice," Tiffany replied flatly. "She's dead." "No, she's not," Treeheart said. "What do you mean?" Tiffany asked. "How do you know?
"Because," Treeheart replied. "She's my mate."
Chapter 7- Sparkle
Sparkle was very scared. Every night she slept, she dreamt of horrifying images, going through her head one by one, all scenes of what could have happened to her mom. In her heart, Sparkle knew these things weren't happening. But deep, deep, down, she knew that sometime, sooner or later, they were going to have to take matters into their paws if they wanted to save Tiffany. The following day, Sparkle was shaking. A couple of nights before, she had dreamed that a big tom knew where their mother was and was with her. This fact was supposed to be comforting, yet it scared Sparkle more than Shine would ever know.
Sparkle curled her paws back underneath her and fell into a deep sleep.
Chapter 8- Shine
Shine could feel Sparkle shivering against her. She sighed and shook her littermate. Sparkle woke with a gasp. She looked scared, Shine thought. Shine noticed that Sparkle's pelt looked matted and ungroomed as she looked closer. Sparkle shook her head as though she was trying to clear it. Shine stretched and padded into the warm sunshine by her sister. Brightsun was coming, Shine could smell it on the wind. But Sparkle was still shivering, her cold pelt pressing against Shine's. "What's wrong?" Shine asked Sparkle. Sparkle shivered. "I guess I'm just worried about Tiff-" Both cats heard an eerie noise that made them almost jump out of their skin.
Shine stiffened. "That sounded like an owl! She gasped. "I've only heard about them in nursery stories! I never thought they were real!" A cat screeched somewhere in the distance. Both sisters shouted at the same time: "That sounds like dad!"
Chapter 9- Tiffany
"What do you mean, your mate?" Tiffany asked. "Are you my father?" Treeheart bowed his head. "I am sorry I was not there to watch you grow up." Tiffany bared her teeth. "You were not there to watch me. And yet you dare come back t-to watch my kits?" She took a step forward and shook her head. "I will defend my kits with my life!" She snorted. "Unlike you! You left us on the rolling gravel path before we opened our eyes. From the moment I opened mine, I had no father, no mother, just my brothers and me. I have been taking care of them my entire life! But you never even bothered to put a whisker of effort into our lives!"
She approached him slowly. Then she yowled to the morning sky. " I have no father!" Treeheart backed away. "I-I'm sorry for abandoning you" "Didn't you hear me?" Tiffany snarled. "I have no father!"
Chapter 10- Sparkle
"He's gone." said Sparkle numbly. "We're too late. The owl took him." "Well, get up!" Shine said. " We still have to find mo - Tiffany." "We still have to find Tiffany." Then something fell out of Sparkle's pelt. Her tiny stick! Her mom gave her as a present for her first birthday. As she reached with her paw to pick it up, she realized that she could hear something. It sounded like...Oh, I hope we find mom and dad. I hope Sparkle's okay. Is there something wrong? She looks like she's listening to something... "Ah! Shut up, Shine!" "But... I didn't say anything." Shine said. "Yes, you did! You said: Oh, I hope we find mom and dad. I hope Sparkle's okay. Is there
something wrong? She looks like she's listening to something... " Shine looked confused, then shocked."Sparkle..." she said in a hushed voice. "Those were my thoughts, not my words." "Hmm...Think of a number between 1 and 1 million." Sparkle said."Ok," Shine said. Sparkle thought... Ah ha! 5678. "Five thousand, six hundred and seventy-eight." Sparkle said. Shine gasped and said "Sparkle! You can read minds!" Sparkle's head started spinning again. Again? She thought as she blacked out. Finally, she gave in and let the darkness pull her in.
Chapter 11- Shine
Shine shook her sister until she groggily opened her eyes. “Wh- What happened,” Sparkle asked. “You blacked out.” Shine said. Uh oh, She thought. She doesn't look too good. I do look good!” Sparkle meowed angrily. "And I'm fine. " She can read my mind! Shine thought. “Yeah, apparently I can re- WHAT!” Sparkle said. Then she screamed. She pointed her paw at Shine and screamed, "Your- Your-You're FLOATING!" Shine looked down and screamed! She was floating ten feet off the ground! "AHHHHHHHHH" She screamed at the top of her lungs. "Wa-Wait! I can read minds and you
