Emily Rose was excited for her first day back at Tiny Tots Learning Center! As they've done every year, since she started there as an infant, her mommy and daddy introduced her to her new teacher, Mrs. Ely, before leaving to go to work. Emily Rose grew up believing that every family had a mommy and daddy in it because that is what her family had! Emily Rose looked around the classroom and was excited to see that most of her classmates were friends from her two year old group, except for one. Just then, Mrs. Ely announced they were going to have circle time before going outside for recess.

The class sat around their orange carpet and the teacher announced that there was a new student who has never been to Tiny Tots before, her name was Samantha. Mrs. Ely knew Samantha was nervous, because the little girl has never been away from her parents, so she told the class that they were going to go around the circle and introduce themselves.
Mrs. Ely said, "Samantha, since you are sitting to my right, why don't you go first!" Samantha took a deep breath and said, "My name is Samantha. I'm three years old, I moved here from Georgia. My favorite color, it's purple, that's why I wore this shirt today!" Kimmy and Michael went next, then it was Emily Rose's turn. She said, "My name is Emily Rose and I'm four years old. I'm smart, my favorite color is red, and I have a little brother on the way!" The rest of the class introduced themselves, ending with Mrs. Ely. Mrs. Ely said, "As you know, My name is Mrs. Ely and I'm your Preschool teacher. I love playing with my dog, going on trips with my husband, and being a teacher. I would like to thank everyone for sharing a little about themselves. We will be getting to know each other more during this week. For now, it is time to go out to recess. Please line up at the back door."

Everyone was playing on the playground with another preschool class, laughing and having fun. Emily Rose came down the slide and landed in the sand. As she dusted herself off, she heard one of her classmates as Samantha, "Did your dad bring you to school today?" Samantha nodded her head yes and said, "Daddy Eric brought me to school today because daddy Jesse had to go to work early." Her classmates were quiet for a few minutes. All of a sudden, Emily Rose walks up behind Samantha and said, "Did you say you have two dads?" Samantha responded by nodding her head yes. Emily Rose's face turned red, clearly upset by what Samantha said.
Emily Rose yelled at Samantha, "Liar, liar pants on fire! Everyone knows that kids have a mommy and daddy! If you have two daddies, you're weird!" That hurt Samantha's feelings, and just as she walked away and sat on the tire swing, Mrs. Ely walked over to her and asked the rest of the class to join her.

Mrs. Ely said, "I'm very disappointed to hear a classmate tell Samantha that she was weird because she has two dads. Even though some of you may have mommies and daddies, other friends may have a different type of family. All families are different and that's okay because it's what makes each of us special and unique!"
