One day, Ms. Sasso and Ms. Lawless decided to explore three different types of rocks- Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic.

First, they explored Sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks start off as sediments in rivers, and are carried off into lakes or oceans. During this time, the sediments lose water and stick together to become a sedimentary rock.

Some characteristics of sedimentary rocks that can help us classify them are bedding, fossils, ripple marks, and cracks.
Bedding is the different layering of rocks. Fossils are the remains of plants or animals left in rocks. Ripple marks and cracks are repeated ridges in rocks.

Ms. Sasso and Ms. Lawless then continued on their journey to find another type of rock.

They visited a volcano where they found igneous rocks. Volcanoes erupt lava or magma when they explode. When the magma cools, igneous rocks are formed.
