Out of all the states who sent delegates to this convention, Rhode Island was the only one to not participate. The reason for not participating in this event is likely because they were a small state so they didn't feel they had the power to make a difference in decision making.
George Washington was the president of this convention and from his status as the commander of the Continental Army from years ago, this gave this event a form of legitimacy.
James Madison, the man who is considered to be ' The Father of the Constitution'. The man who took notes of this convention and is the reason why we know this event of the past. He was the one who prosed the Virginia plan and would become the 4th U.S. president.
The Great Compromise was a compromise between the big and small states about how to represent themselves in the new government they would make. The big states wanted representation to be based on the population so that they could have more representation as they had more people they could represent but the smaller states thought that if that were to happen they would be powerless as they didn't have as many people and so they argued that every state should have the same amount of representation. These ideals were the embodiments of the Virginia Plan, the plan supported by the big states such as Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The smaller states supported the New Jersey Plan which gave all states an equal amount of representation regardless of how large the population of the state was. Roger Sherman, the man who introduced the Great Compromise, offered that there would be 2 legislative branches in the new government, the Senate which had an equal amount of representation for each state, and the House of Representatives that had representation proportion to the population of each state. These branches were the essence of both plans and with this compromise, both groups would both gain something.
The 3/5 Compromise was a compromise between the Northern and the Southern states about whether or not slaves should be counted as part of the population. The South believed that slaves should count as part of the population as they wanted to be able to have more representation. However, the North didn't want the South to have an unfair position of power so they thought slaves shouldn't count to the population. So the compromise formed from these views was the 3/5 compromise which counted slaves as 3/5 of a person. Of course, with more population, the South would be taxed more as well which was also part of the compromise.
