One day at school on the bulletin board Pippy noticed a flyer to sign
up for baseball. Pippy always loved baseball. That night she decided to
ask her parents if she could join.

Pippy Marie Salts was an average ten year old girl with four
brothers and twin sisters. She was what most people would consider a
tomboy. Her hair was shoulder length and dark red. Pippy came across
as outgoing.

Pippy asked, “Mom and Dad, I was wondering if I could try out for
baseball at school?”
Her dad said, “Sugar Plum, I think that would be great.”
With excitement Pippy said, “YES! Here’s the permission slip I need
you to fill out so I can turn it in.”

Pippy walked into her living room to ask her brothers if they
wanted to play catch with her. Without looking up they said “NO!
We’re too busy playing video games.” Pippy’s sisters were too busy
texting to even hear her ask, like usual teenagers.

She decided to take her dog Dixie outside to play catch. Pippy threw the ball
and Dixie jumped in the air and caught the ball. Dixie brought the ball back to
Pippy and they continued to play catch for 45 minutes.

The next day Pippy’s mom drove her to school. She was so excited about signing
up for baseball that she could not stop talking.
“Mom, I can’t wait to try out. Do you think I’ll make it?” Pippy asked.
Her mom replied, “Sure you will. Just do your best.”
They pulled up to the school and Pippy leaped out of the car and started running.
She heard in the distance her mom yell, “Have a great day, honey!”

She ran all the way to the bulletin board and started searching through her bag for a
pencil. She found a pencil and wrote her name down and was about to turn around to leave
when three boys walked up behind her.
The first boy said, "Pippy, girls can’t play baseball.”
“Girls aren’t supposed to play baseball. They can’t hit or throw like boys can!” the
second boy said while rolling his eyes.
The third boy looked at the two other boys and pointed his thumb in their direction and
said, “Yeah, what they said!”
Pippy turned around and said, “Be quiet. I bet I can hit a ball further than you three!”
The first two boys said together, “Yeah, right!”
The third boy said in agreement, “Yeah, what they said.”
Pippy turned and stomped away angrily.

Throughout the day she talked to all of her girl friends and convinced them to
sign up for baseball. Pippy got 12 out of 13 friends to bring permission slips
home and talk to their parent about signing up.
