-Amelia Earhart

On July 24th, 1897, a little girl named Amelia Earhart was born in Atchinson, Kansas. She sometimes lived with her grandparents and younger sister, and sometimes she moved around with her father, who worked on the railroads.

Amelia spent her childhood playing outside, doing activities such as hunting, sledding, climbing trees, playing basketball, and biking. She enjoyed these activities, even though they were not typical activities for girls.

Amelia had some family trouble when she was growing up, and since they moved often, Amelia was homeschooled until she reached high school. When she got to high school, she lived in Chicago and decided to go to Hyde Park High School, where she would graduate at the end of the year.

She then went to the Ogantz School to continue her education. While at the Ogontz School, Amelia took a trip to Toronto to visit her sister. It was in Toronto, Canada, where Amelia's interest in flying was sparked. She went there to visit her sister, but she ended up making the impulse decision to stay as a nurse for World War I soldiers. She would never go back to finish her education at the Ogontz School.

While Amelia worked as a volunteer nurse for World War 1 soldiers, she was exposed to aviators who flew planes in World War 1. Although civilian flights were restricted during the war and she could not learn to fly, Amelia learned a lot from the aviators around her, absorbing their stories.

After Amelia's time volunteering as a nurse, she went to Columbia University for premedical courses before leaving to help her parents in California. They were struggling with financial issues, as well as marriage problems.

In California, Amelia played sports again, mainly anything outside and in the open. While she was living with her parents, she dragged her father to all the air shows in the nearby area to their home. She wanted to be a pilot.

Finally, Amelia got the chance to fly. Her first flight would be alongside Frank Hawks. As soon as she felt the exhilaration of being in the sky, Amelia knew she had to be a pilot. She knew it would be challenging, but she was up for anything.

Next, Amelia had to get the funds for her new passion. But how? She began working at a telephone company and trucking company. Then, she needed someone to teach her to fly. She found Anita Snook. Anita Snook was the first woman to graduate from the Glenn Curtiss School.

She worked hard and got the funds for flight lessons with Anita Snook. Amelia soon found that she was not a natural with flying, and it would actually be challenging for her to learn to fly, but that never stopped her.

On her 25th birthday, with help from her parents, she could buy her first plane. It was a yellow plane, which she named The Canary. She needed over 15 hours of lessons before taking her first solo flight, but she did it.

Without Amelia's perseverance through her flight lessons, she would not have made it as a pilot. But she did, and after a year of hard work, she set an altitude record for flying the highest of any woman before her.

She was only the 16th woman in the US to get a flight license. Soon after, she got a call from Captain Railey, asking her to fly across the Atlantic ocean with Wilmer Schultz and Lou Gordon. How could she say no to that?
She decided to go on the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. If they succeeded, Amelia would be the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She would instantly become a sensation across the world.

The group succeeded in their trip across the Atlantic Ocean, and Amelia showed other women around the world what they were capable of if they worked hard and persevered. She was an instant celebrity. But she still wanted to do more. She continued to focus and publish books about her journey.

Amelia spent a lot of time giving speeches and touring. She was a sensation all over the world. Although she had never actually flown the plane during the flight, she became hugely popular from her flight.

After her flight across the Atlantic, Amelia didn't know what to do. Although she received numerous job offers from many places, she decided to work for a magazine, writing articles for young women to read.

During this time, she also gave speeches to many different organizations and groups, emphasizing that women should be given the opportunity to learn to fly.
