The Last Leaf

What went wrong only god knows
For Johnsy became squeamish.
Pneumonia took over her
leaving her restless on her bed,
Gazing out all along.

Sue felt heavy,
worried for her friend
Called up the doctor
As Johnsy’s condition worsened.
Doctor asked Sue,
“Johnsy seems bothered
Anything bothering her?
It seems she has given up
and lost all hope.
Medicines won’t work if she lost it all.”

Comforting Johnsy
was Sue’s priority.
Fashion and styling talks,
whistling all along
was the only thing she could do.
Counting back!
Sue seeks Johnsy’s attention.
Slowly steadily she counted
“Seven…...Six…...Five”!
Johnsy makes Sue aware
That she would die,
Once the last leaf falls from the Ivy.
Sue convinces and convinces Johnsy,
that it won’t happen.
But Johnsy does not change her mind
and keeps counting
the remaining leaves.
