Pink or Blue: Why Have to Choose? A book about expressing yourself even if it means being different. Oliver and Amelia are in grade 2 their teacher Mrs. O’Brian paired them together for a group project. They quickly became best friends. They started to do everything together. Oliver played with toys such as cars, and lego. Amelia’s parents bought her dolls and baking ovens. The more Amelia went to Oliver’s house she realized she enjoyed playing with the toys he had. Oliver loved playing with dolls and to bake so they decided to switch toys… but kept it a secret. Oliver and Amelia felt like they didn’t belong because they grew up being taught that girls and boys play with different toys. One day they woke up and realized there was no reason to be embarrassed if they liked doing something. It is better to be happy than try to be like everyone else. People quickly came to accept them for who they are.

I have a toy kitchen at home, said Amelia.

I didn’t know they made toy kitchens, replied Oliver.

I’ll ask my mom if you can come over and see it, I don’t really play with it a lot though.

Cool, I would like that.

Oliver, my mom said you can come over after school if you want, explained Amelia.

We can learn how to make cookies in your kitchen! Oliver said excitedly.

You have so many cool toys Oliver said with a big smile on his face.

Yeah, I am lucky to have these toys but I don't really like playing with them muttered Amelia.

You have a fairy doll? Said Oliver in shock, those are hard to find.

Yes, replied Amelia. I’m surprised you like it … dolls are for girls.

Oliver was upset and stated, my mom, is coming to pick me up. It's almost time for dinner.

Okay, maybe next time we can go to your house!
Sure

Amelia went to bed thinking about how she didn’t like her doll.
If Oliver liked it so much he should have it.

Oliver went home and thought about what Amelia said… “Doll’s are for girls”.
If they were for girl’s he thought, why would I like them?

The next day at school Amelia brought the doll for Oliver.

Here Oliver I want you to have this, she said handing him the doll.
Thank you Amelia he said, quickly hiding it in his bag. He invited Amelia over to see his toys after school.

Oliver was scared that the people in his class would make fun of him for having a “girl toy”.

That blue car is so cool!
Amelia got there and her eyes lit up when she saw the toys Oliver had.

I got it for my seventh birthday, I haven’t really played with it, do you want it? Said Oliver handing it over.
For real? Thank you, said Amelia putting it in her bag to take home.

I brought more toys for you too Oliver, said Amelia
Thank you so much
