Book: Well then you came to the right book!
Reader: I want to learn chess!
Book: Normally a pawn moves by advancing a single square, but the first time it moves, it has the option of advancing two squares. Pawns may not use the initial two-square advance to jump over an occupied square, or to capture. Any piece immediately in front of a pawn, friend or foe, blocks its advance
The Pawn
Reader: What is a Pawn?
The rook
Reader: What is a Rook?
Book: The rook is a piece in the game of chess resembling a castle. Formerly the piece was called the tower, marquess, rector, and comes. The term castle is considered to be informal, incorrect, or old-fashioned. Each player starts the game with two rooks, one on each of the corner squares on their own side of the board.
Reader: What is a Bishop?
Book: The bishop chess piece moves in any direction diagonally. Bishops capture opposing pieces by landing on the square occupied by an enemy piece. bishop that begin on the light squares may only move on light squares, and bishop that begin on black squares can only travel on dark colored squares.
Reader: What is the Knight?
Book: The knight moves unconventionally compared to other chess pieces. Whereas other pieces move in straight lines, knights move in an “L-shape”—that is, they can move two squares in any direction vertically followed by one square horizontally, or two squares in any direction horizontally followed by one square vertically.
