In my new cover, I chose to put a scenery of London including London's bridge in the background and the three friends, sitting in a boat on the river Thames under London's bridge for several reasons: The story begins in London, under London's bridge and is about three friends who are sailing in a boat along the river. I added speech bubbles which represent the many conversations, conflicts and funny stories that were told during their trip.
A summary of the plot
The story begins by introducing Jerome, the main character and the writer of the story, his friends Harris and George, and Jerome's dog, named Montmorency.
The three are spending an evening discussing illnesses from which they all suffer and conclude that they need a holiday. They eventually decide on a boating holiday across the River Thames in England.
The remainder of the story describes their river journey and the pleasant and less pleasant experiences they go through, which are full of humorous anecdotes. The story ends after a few rainy days overwhelm them. They decide to leave the boat and go back to their city comfort.
my favorite character
Largely based on the author himself, Jerome, the main character, who is referred to as "J.", is a single, relatively young middle-class man living in London. He likes history and literature and spends a lot of his time daydreaming about knights who wonder around England, for instance. This daydreaming sometimes gets him into trouble because he is not paying attention to what he is doing. A clear hypochondriac, Jerome claims to be suffering from all kinds of diseases and his friends sympathize with him. He misses no opportunity to make readers laugh with his intelligent and witty humor and he is able to make fun of himself (and his friends). At times he gets philosophical and shares his wisdom with his readers and at other times he shows sensitivity. He is my favorite character because he is the leader of the group and a very funny, intelligent and responsible person.
My second favorite character
George, like his friends, is another young, single man living in London. Like J., he thinks he suffers from working too hard. He is also the one who came with the idea for a river trip as the solution to their ill health. George is a keen drinker of alcohol. He is teased by his friends for having large feet and sleeping a lot, a habit which sometimes creates funny situations. Before the trip, George buys a banjo and a book from which he will learn to play it. His friends are skeptical but allow him to try the situation is described in a satiric way. In the end of the book, it is George who suggests that they should cut the trip short by taking a train home and go back to their city comfort. He is my second favorite character because the book would not be half as interesting without him.
My least favorite character
Montmorency is J.’s dog who accompanies the three men during the trip. Montmorency is a small fox terrier. His behavior seems to mimic the foolishness and clumsiness behavior of the three men. At one point, for example, he attacks a boiling kettle, frustrated by the noise it’s making. Montmorency likes to collect a gang of dogs he finds in the town and lead them around the slums to fight other dogs. When they reach Oxford, their destination, he manages to fight eleven fights on the first day and fourteen fights on the second day. He is my least favorite character because he causes a lot of trouble along the trip.
Book recommendation
I highly recommend the book "Three man in a boat" because it is a humorous and interesting book to read. The uniqueness of the book is not in its plot, but in the funny stories and amusing anecdotes scattered throughout it.
