Dear Parent/Guardian,
If your child is under the age of 13, StoryJumper has established the following procedures and policies to ensure our practices comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
StoryJumper has two types of accounts: Educational Accounts & Independent Accounts, each provide a child under the age of 13 with the ability to participate. Below we describe, by account type, how we obtain your permission, your role, and how we use and disclose the information we collect and protect the privacy of your child.
StoryJumper requires that the primary account holder (whether Educator for an Educational Account or Parent for an Independent Account), consent to such personally identifiable information before they allow it to be used.
I. Educational Accounts.
Educators, such as teachers at your child’s school, can use StoryJumper Educational Accounts for educational purposes. These accounts are FERPA and COPPA compliant. Moreover, StoryJumper and its Educator Partners ensure that they meet industry best practices for Student Data Privacy.
You can find more information about Educational Accounts in our Educational Account Agreement, Educational Account Privacy Statement, COPPA Direct Notice to Educators and our Data Security & Breach Statement. This section will provide an overview of how these accounts align with COPPA obligations.
- Account Creation Process. Educators create and manage Educational Accounts for their classroom and students.
- COPPA Consent. Educators use our Educational Accounts for educational purposes only. Because of this, they provide the COPPA consent for your child to participate.
- Educator = Educational Account Owner. Similar to the Independent Account, the Educational Account provides the child with a sub-account that is linked to the Educational Account. The Educator is the owner of the Educational Account and controls how/if content is shared and they oversee the content within student stories.
- Types of Personally Identifiable Information Collected & How We Use It. This information can be found in our Educational Account Privacy Statement.
- Access, Review, Correction, and Deletion of Your Child’s Personally Identifiable Information. You can access, review, correct and delete your child’s personally identifiable information by contacting the Educator managing the Educational Account to which your child is linked.
- New Consent If Change to Our Educational Account Terms. As part of our agreement with Educators, we give notice of and secure consent to material changes to our Educational Account Agreement and/or Educational Account Privacy Statement.
II. Independent Account: Children Under the Age of 13.
StoryJumper Independent Accounts for children under the age of 13 are accounts that are maintained by you and your child. When you agree to allow your child to set up an account with StoryJumper, using the process outlined below, they will have a Child Account that is linked to your Parent Account. Through the Parent Account, you control whether and how your child shares their content with others.
- Account Creation Process
During the Independent Account creation process, StoryJumper will request Date of Birth to determine if COPPA applies. When a visitor to our websites self-identifies as under 13 years old during the initial registration process, we collect the child’s birth date, user name, password and parent’s or legal guardian’s email address. Any information provided by the child is not used to contact the child unless or until we receive parental or legal guardian consent. Upon your consent, you, as the parent/guardian, will be required to open a “Parent Account” to which your child’s Child Account is linked as a sub-account. You are the owner of both the main and sub-account and have the duty to manage its use as outlined below. This includes the requirement that only you allow the disclosure of personal information for any child under the age of 13 who is linked to your Parent Account with your consent. - How We Verify Consent.
After receiving your email address during the Independent Account creation process, we will send you an email to allow you to verify your consent in one of two COPPA compliant ways.- Credit Card / PayPal Verification. You can choose to verify your consent to allow your child to have a StoryJumper account by authorizing a small transaction ($0.99) on your credit card or PayPal account. If you choose this method of verification, you’ll receive a $2 credit in your StoryJumper account to use for future purchases.
- Signed Permission Slip. You can also choose to print, complete and sign a Permission Slip which verifies your consent.
- Parent/Guardian = Account Owner. You, as the parent/guardian, are the primary account holder by virtue of your Parent Account. This means that:
- You are the person primarily responsible for ordering services and paying any fees or other charges made to a StoryJumper account.
- You are responsible for deciding whether to share your child’s content with third parties.
- You are responsible for the active monitoring of your child’s content. Children who are under the age of 13 are expressly prohibited from including any personally identifiable information in any content that they post to our websites unless or until their parents or legal guardians give permission. You agree that you will only allow your child to include any personally identifiable in their content with your consent.
