CHOLERA
Cholera is a serious disease caused by the bacteria
Vibrio cholerae, which affects the intestinal system
of the body. An infected person experiences severe
vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Without
immediate medical treatment, cholera may result in
death within four to twelve hours after symptoms
begin. Due to a large loss of body fluids, cholera is
leaves its survivors with a terrifying physical
appearance.

Transmission
Cholera is very contagious. It is spread by
the consumption of infected feces that
contaminate food and water. It can also be
spread through human to human contact.
Some people have been infected with
cholera by eating raw or not thoroughly
cooked shellfish.

Symptoms
Cholera infection is mild or often shows no
symptoms, but it can sometimes be
severe. One in 20 infected victims will have
severe disease characterized by profuse
watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps.
It can take anywhere from a few hours to 5
days for symptoms to appear after
infection. Symptoms typically appear in 2-3
days.

Treatments
Cholera can be successfully treated by
immediate replacement of the fluid and salts
lost through diarrhea. Patients can be treated
with oral rehydration solution, which is a
prepackaged mixture of sugar and salts that
is to be mixed with water and drunk in large
amounts. This solution is used throughout the
world to treat diarrhea. Severe cases also
require intravenous fluid replacement. With
prompt rehydration, fewer than 1% of cholera
patients die.Antibiotics shorten the course and
diminish the severity of the illness, but they
are not as important as receiving rehydration.
People who develop severe diarrhea and
vomiting in countries where cholera occur
should seek medical attention promptly.
