Once upon a time
not so long ago,
Snickerdoodle went to her brother
Little Boy Blue.
“Hey, Blue,” she said.
“Let’s go on an adventure!”

“Ok,” said Little Boy Blue.
“Shall I bring my little cars?” he asked.
“Hmmm,” thought Snickerdoodle, “maybe you should
bring one or two, just in case.”
“Just in case what?” asked Little Boy Blue.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Snickerdoodle answered with a
twinkle in her eye.
“You never know
when we’ll need a little car or truck.”

They asked Mommy Dearie to please pack a lunch
and off they went.
Blue and Doodle,
as Snickerdoodle was known to very special people,
each got on their bicycles and
rode off into the woods.

Now they had dreamed for a long time about
going into these woods but this was the first time
they had actually done it.
The trees always looked so pretty and inviting as
they gently swayed in the wind.
It seemed like a delightful place to have an
adventure.
As they began to bike their way into the woods
on a little dirt path, it seemed to get more difficult
pedaling on the well-worn dirt.
“Doodle, wait!” called Blue
as he struggled to keep up with his big sister.

Doodle stopped and patiently waited for
Blue to catch up to her.
She could see he was out of breath and all red in the
face as he had been working so hard biking along.
Doodle had an idea.
“Hey, Blue. How about if we leave our bikes here
and just hike the rest of the way? It’s such a pretty
day and that way we can see better what’s around us.
We could find some pretty leaves and maybe even spot
some animal tracks. We couldn’t do that if we were on
our bikes.”

Well, Blue was greatly relieved and even a bit thankful. He
wanted to enjoy this adventure, but so far it had been a lot of
work for his little legs.
They parked their bikes carefully under a tall maple tree and
tied a red hankie on the tree so they could easily spot it on
their return. Doodle was happy Mommy Dearie had tucked it
into her pocket.
Doodle then picked up the backpack with the lunch; Blue
had his own backpack with an assortment of his little cars and
trucks – just in case - and they went
on their way.

It was a simple path, not too hilly.
But it hadn’t been traveled on in a while so they had to
stop once in a while
to clear away some twigs.
They walked slowly so they wouldn’t miss any animal
tracks and
once in a while picked up an interesting leaf, placing
it into a backpack for safekeeping. They saw a variety
of paw prints
and could only guess what type of animal or even bird
they belonged to.

After what seemed hours and hours to them,
Blue announced that he was hungry and surely it must be
time for lunch. Well, Doodle actually had been thinking the
very same thing!
So they found a couple of big flat rocks to sit on
and they brought out their lunch.
Oh that Mommy Dearie!
She knew just what they loved!
Blue had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, whole and
uncut! And Doodle had her favorite: a peanut butter and
honey sandwich, cut into four triangles! There were little
containers of hummus along with tiny carrots, juice boxes
for each, along with cups of oranges and little plastic
spoons.
Mommy Dearie even remembered to pack napkins.

And there at the very bottom of the lunch bag was a
note! Doodle could read a little
so she sounded out the letters
and read it out loud to Blue. It said,
“Have a fun adventure today. I love you.”
And it was signed from Mommy Dearie.
The lunch filled them up and the note made them
smile.
It actually made them miss Mommy Dearie and Daddy
Pie and they wondered whether they should go home
yet.
But Doodle said no. There was more adventure
ahead. She really had no idea about what was ahead,
but she imagined that there must be something!

Once again, they started walking.
They had been careful to pick up all the trash from their
lunch and take it with them. They knew God made this
earth and that they were supposed to help take care of
it. Mommy Dearie and Daddy Pie would be proud!
The path began to get a bit curvy so they could not see
too far up ahead. Then all of a sudden, they came to a
clearing in the woods. They stood still for a moment to
take it all in. Ahead of them was a large field, no trees,
no houses, no fences, just a large empty field.
It was surrounded by woods and
they weren’t sure which way to go
since the path ended in the field.
