Olivia is a student
in Miss Smith's
first grade class at
Oak Park
Elementary. She
likes to play
games, draw, and
watch movies. But
Olivia is a bit
different from the
other boys and
girls in the first
grade. Olivia has
epilepsy.

On the first day of
school, Miss Smith
explained this to the
other students.
"Epilepsy is a problem
for Olivia because
sometimes, her brain
can't control what she is
doing. This is called a
seizure," said Miss
Smith. "We all have to
help make sure that
Olivia is always safe
here at school."

Miss Smith's
students take turns
doing extra jobs
every week to
make sure Olivia is
always safe. This
week, Jessica,
David, Sydney,
Timothy, and Paige
are Olivia's
helpers.

If Olivia has a seizure
while walking or using
the stairs, she might fall
and bump her head.
Olivia needs a walking
buddy. That is Jessica's
job. She walks next to
Olivia in line and holds
her arm when they
have to use the stairs.

Olivia can't play most of
the games in P.E. class
because she might hurt
herself if she has a
seizure. She needs
friends to play different
games with her. David
and Sydney take turns
being Olivia's P.E.
buddies. David and
Sydney play card
games and do puzzles
on the bleachers with
Olivia.

Olivia can't climb on the
jungle gym or play on
the swing set because
she might fall off if she
has a seizure. Olivia
needs someone to
watch out for her at
recess. Timothy is
Olivia's recess buddy.
He plays with her in the
sandbox.

Olivia has a special
diet because she has
epilepsy. She needs
someone to remind the
other boys and girls
that they shouldn't
share their food with
Olivia. Paige is Olivia's
lunch buddy. She
makes sure that Olivia
eats the lunch her
mom packed her.
Paige also makes sure
that the other students
don't share food with
Olivia.

Miss Smith explained
what else the students
should do to help
Olivia. "If Olivia has a
seizure at school, find
an adult as fast as you
can," she said. Miss
Smith also told the
students to be nice to
Olivia and try to
understand that even
though she has
epilepsy, she still likes
to do all the same
things that they do.
Olivia really isn't that
different from all her
friends.
