The 5 Learning Theories
Constructivism Theory: individuals construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world through experiences and reflection.
Cognitivism Theory: The mental process of processing information through encoding, storage, and retrieval of information in memory.
Behaviorism Theory: Environmental experiences and stimuli shape one's behavior

The 5 Learning Theories
Learning by Doing Theory: Individuals learn through active participation in tasks and experiences
Connectivism Theory: Individuals learn from different networks and connections

Activity #1
Name the 5 learning theories previously mentioned and try to come up with an example for each theory.

Which learning theory best supports my approach to learning EM203?
The Learning by Doing Theory
The theory that most supports my own approach to learning in this online course is the Learning-by-doing theory.
What is the Learning by Doing Theory?
This learning theory is an educational concept based on performing certain activities and reflecting on your experience. It is often referred to as experiential learning. This theory suggests that individuals gain knowledge and skills through repeated practice and experience, rather than simply through passive observation or theoretical instruction. This theory believes that hands-on, practical experience is the most effective way to learn, it allows individuals to apply what they have learned in real-world situations and to receive
immediate feedback on their performance. This theory has been applied in various settings, including vocational education, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training programs, where individuals learn by actively participating in tasks and receiving guidance from more experienced individuals.
Example - Learning the guitar
Playing the guitar forces you to learn by using the guitar and getting used to the different sounds and chords. You cannot become a guitarist just from reading books about how to play, you have to gain hands-on experience and learn by doing it with constant practice.

Activity #2
What's something you've recently learned through the learning by doing theory? And what theory best supports your preferred style of learning?

Common Experiences That Involve Learning by Doing
In the Workforce
Internships

TAKEAWAY: What is Learning by Doing
There's a 4 step process to learning by doing:
1. The individual must be engaged in the experience by taking part in the activity
2. After reflecting on what was learned throughout the experiment/ activity
3. Develop an idea based on your experience with the activity
4. Be able to apply this idea to real-life experiences
Activity #3
Try to come up with 3 benefits of the learning-by-doing approach.

Benefits of Learning by Doing
- Results in a deeper understanding of the concepts
- Keeps individuals engaged
- Highly motivating
- Develops skills for success through communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking
- Improves information retention
- Provides a different learning environment/experience than the traditional classroom
- Allows individuals to solve issues in their own manner
2 Types of Learning by Doing
There are two different approaches to learning by doing, the apprenticeship approach and experiential learning. Both of these approaches are very similar and offer students the chance to apply the material they have learned.
Many people can relate to the learning-by-doing method at Laurier because of all the hands-on interactive activities. These activities include class seminars, labs, workshops, and the co-op program. This lets students apply the material they learned and reflect on it

How is it Effective for my Own Learning Style?
I have always been considered a kinesthetic learner, even as a child I took a bunch of learning tests and they all came back saying I was a kinesthetic learner. This means that I like to learn by doing something hands-on. Personally, I have a hard time learning from listening to lectures or reading the textbook. Trial and error and actual hands-on experience is a much more effective way for me to learn because it helps me understand and process information more effectively. This helps keep me very engaged in this class because it is my preferred style of learning.

How is it applied in EM203?
The learning-by-doing theory is applied in EM203 because there are all kinds of activities that are constantly keeping students engaged and active in class. There aren’t lectures to listen to and there isn’t a lot of readings. It makes you learn the content through actually performing the activities. These activities also reinforce content that we have learned in the class and make you apply it to real situations.
