Tomato yawned and rolled out of bed. He dressed himself with salad dressing, and stretched. His shiny red skin gleamed in the sunlight. Yawning again, Tomato ate a quick breakfast of bugs, and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. He brought a snack along with him. Tomato looked around and saw huge footprints on the ground. "Oh dear," he thought to himself. "I'd better find out where these are coming from." And with that, he set off, following the mysterious trail of footprints.
That same morning, Apple and Lemon were asleep in their homes. A big beam of sunlight streamed into Apple's tree, straight through her hollow trunk. Startled, Apple fell off her bed and onto the hard wooden floor. She dusted herself off and replaced her stem and leaf with a different stem and leaf, about to polish the first one so it was shiny again, when she decided to go early to Lemon's house to ask for a splash of lemon juice. Without lemon juice, Apple would rot away, wrinkle, and even die! Every day Apple got lemon juice, though she could go a week without it.
Lemon was just waking up when Apple came into her house. Lemon kindly gave Apple the lemon juice, and Apple poured it over herself. They discussed what they would do in the morning.
"I'm going to head over to Orange's house," Apple said, looking out the window at Orange, who was sun-bathing outside, on the ground by his tree. "He agreed to go with me to "Pear's Shop for Hungry Fruits and Veggies." Lemon nodded.
"Mind if I come along?" she asked, also looking at Orange.
"Not at all!" Apple said, smiling at her friend. Lemon turned around and went pale. She had been so busy looking out the window with Apple that she hadn't noticed... her lemon juice bottle was GONE!
Orange was resting peacefully beside his tree, his sunglasses on, leaning on his side. His tree, which was very, very, very small compared to Apple's and Lemon's- so small he could stand up and reach the leaves, because it wasn't fully grown- gave him shade from the sun, but we wore sunglasses all the same. He turned his head and took off the sunglasses as Apple and Lemon rushed over to him.
"What's up?" Orange asked, standing up and looking from one concerned face to another.
"The lemon juice is gone!" Apple and Lemon replied simultaneously. "It's stolen!" Orange took on a serious face.
"C'mon. Let's get to the police." He and Apple and Lemon rushed over to the Watermelon Police Station, HQ of the melons.
When Orange and the others got to Watermelon Police Headquarters, Tomato was there, talking to the Chief Watermelon and saying something about "huge footprints!". Orange walked over.
"Hey, Tomato," he said, and Apple and Lemon said "hi" to Tomato as well.
"Hello! Did you hear about the big footprints all over the neighborhood? They're big! They're huge! They're-"
"Potato sized," cut off the Chief Watermelon. "It is likely that Potato was creating those footprints. End of discussion. Tomato, you are dismissed." Tomato's leaves drooped, and Orange gave him a pat on the back before he left.
