I was in the trenches ,cold and tired as I remembered the good days back at my home in Montana, im Tommy George. I miss the beautiful mountain scenery back home but instead I'm stuck in No Man’s Land.
I watched as the bullets fly over my head ,and the sky with its usual gloomy dark gray color from the canons and the fires that make up No Man’s Land. Back home there were posters everywhere for “The young men of America” to join the army. It was 1914 the Great War had just started and everyone was joining the army. In fact I was one of the last ones in my family to join the army. I have 4 brothers and all of them joined the army before me. I was recently married and my wife Juliet was crying the day I left home.
The day I registered for the bootcamp was filled with pride
We were going to serve our country!”one of the recruits yelled out. The 3 week training was brutal. We all had to wake up at 5 in the morning and do 30 pushups before we made our bed, wear our clothes and brush our teeth. The day we left for France was filled with Pride and Happiness. As we left via u-boats we copied the Germans and made a better one
to the train station. We then traveled through France via train and landed near Abbeville. Then we walked another 2 miles. While we were walking we occasionally heard the sounds of canons and air strikes. We all then walked into the forest and there it was “the battlefield”. Sergeant, Davies gave a speech “Alright boys were here, here at No Man’s Land to win to win for our country to win for our allies may the lord be with you and lets charge, charge at them with so much so much force that they learn their place as they’re nothing but white scum, charge!”.
Night duty went smoothly. There were just normal warning bullets I sent some too 12 to be exact. I have been in the trench for over 2 years now the war started in 1914 now it's the winter of 1916. Winter is always the worst. There is normally a food shortage every winter but now with this stupid war we will only get some dry bread and coffee because that's what we got last year and I sure hope that it's not the same story this year.
I have made a good friend over the war and his name is Niko Bellic. Niko is Russian and there is a language barrier but Niko can speak a little bit of english. The Germans launched an unexpected attack on our base. They sent about 75 men and they came at night and somehow they came behind our trench 30 of our men were killed. Me and Niko were lucky in fact we alerted everyone I was getting some painkillers for a medic but just then I heard a lot of footsteps. I looked out and saw the scum. I ran to Niko. I woke him up and told him “Niko wake up there are Germans” Niko replied with his rough accent “What do you mean it is night go back to sleep” I pointed out and Niko saw them for himself. We yelled “Ambush ambush the Germans are here wake up wake up the Germans are here!”.
It was Christmas morning today but then the Germans sent a messenger who was waving a white flag. Sargent. Davies sent me to go see what was wrong. I climbed up the trench and walked out. It felt relieving we haven't left the trench since we got here and I realized how congested it can get down there. No Man’s Land had this kind of this permanent reddish tint to it was most likely the blood that bleeds out here. I walked up to the German who was holding the flag. He had a note in English I read and it said “Dear Britains we know how much you have been struggling out there come and surrender” while I was reading the note I felt a bullet fly by me it was a trap!
I stabbed the messenger with my bayonet before he shot me with his handgun. I Sprinted back to the trench as the bullets zip past me just when I was about to reach the trench a bullet hit my leg and I fell down into the trench the medics came but I ushered them away because I had to fight the Germans I blankly shot my gun until everything went black that was the last thing I remember.
I woke up in a hospital bed outside of the trench with a warm sunlight reaching my skin it felt healing and as the fireplace heated up the room I also met Niko he was in the bed next to mine he said he broke his leg and that he had to stay here for 3 months and the nurse came to me and said “So Tommy you have to stay here for 4 months until your leg heals and you will be ready to fight for America again”. The 4 months felt peaceful. I was always chatting with Niko talking about my wife and the beautiful scenery of Montana.
I walked up to this young scrawny kid who looked like he was going to die from fear. I walked up to him and introduced myself “Hi kid what's your name” he replied shakily “H-Hi im John”. I introduced John to Niko but just then the Germans threw a bomb signaling that they were coming to invade our base. They did this once last year but failed. We hope the same happens this time. This time the sergeant said I can use the MG. I pick up the heavy gun and start shooting. It felt good as the heat of the gun reached my hands and as the Germans fell to the ground we felt as if the same would happen this year but then we saw something flying towards us. It was a Missile “How that's impossible” I yelled out but then it came and landed towards our trench it landed 150 meters from me and 20 soldiers died on the spot.
John was unfortunately killed during this attack the look of peace on his face was what made me sleep that night and while making conversation with John he told me that he was 19 he was killed at such a young age he could have had so much potential he could have been the one to end this mess
I miss Juliet every night. It has been 3 years since I have seen her. The only memory I have of her is a little pocket size picture of her. The war has increased so much recently we lose about 10 men a day. This cold and cough disease has been spreading around a lot recently and it is deadly so we have been wearing our gas masks to protect ourselves from the virus. We learned that the Germans have moved forward into the other trench 3 miles from Abbeville to confirm if this was true we sent a soldier who was suicidal and made him stand up outside the trench in No Man’s Land, nothing happened to him. So we all moved out and left Abbeville. We came to this other place called Portville ,and on the way we saw how much damage this war has actually caused towns, cities and many other places have been destroyed because of this war.
That was the motivation that kept me going the entire war but at this moment it released a different side of me. I jumped in the trench shooting every German I saw. I ran out of ammo so I just used the MG as a hammer and I smashed my way through the German soldiers. I felt a German grab my leg. It was a young German soldier. I felt no pity towards the kid and the only thing I said was “War is hell kid” and I left him there.
I Felt a sharp pain in my arm. I Turned back and saw the same German soldier with a handgun. The bloke shot me on my arm. The anger I felt was like nothing else I leaped towards the kid and I tackled him into the ground his back landed on a piece of sharp wood and he was groaning and moaning in pain but he still managed to grab a wooden stake and he tried to stab me with it but I grabbed his wrist and controlled his hand and I made him stab himself on the stomach. I saw another soldier in front of him. He had a rifle pointed towards me. The German thought I was unarmed but I had the handgun of the German kid. Before he could react I put a bullet through his head and sent him to the lord. There was another soldier behind me and he kicked my knee from behind and he held me from gunpoint. He said “Give me 1 good reason why I should let you live”, but just then someone came and shot the German, It was Niko!
I walked up to Niko and said “Niko my brother you saved me!”. We both walked around the trench checking to see if there were any more Germans. We killed a couple and I needed a medic immediately. The gunshot wound was only held by a little cloth that I ripped off some random flag. Just then we saw the American flag in place where the German flag was supposed to be.
