Hi! My name is Elizabeth Hopkins, and
when I was six years old I made the voyage
with my family to go to the new world
because it would have freedom and new
laws.

Many people in England wanted religious
freedom, and the King would raise their
taxes if they tried to practice religion their
own way, so in September of 1620, a ship
called the Mayflower set sail off the coast of
England with 102 passengers on board.

Each family was allowed to bring one box of supplies, and my
family brought food, kitchen supplies, and clothing.
It was a very long journey and we would need lots of supplies
for our new home! My brother Matthew and I joined our
Mother and Father in the journey, but we left behind all of
my friends from school, and I will miss them very much.

The 66 day journey on the Mayflower was very hard.
There were many people on the ship and everyone got
sea sick. There were many storms and there was not a
lot to do while we were on board. A baby was born while
we were on the ship!

On November 11, 1620, we settled in a town we named
Plymouth, after Plymouth Rock. There was a lot of fresh
water, but our first winter was harsh. Snow covered the
ground and we had no way to keep warm, and we had
little food. Many of us got sick.

One day a Native American named Samoset
wandered into our village, and he greeted us in
English! Samoset had learned English from
some fishermen who came to trade with his
tribe.

Samoset had a friend named Squanto, who
taught us how to grow crops the right way. In
return, we gave the Native Americans some of
the food we grew.

The Native Americans spoke a different
language than us, but thanks to Squanto and
Samoset, we were able to communicate with
our new friends.

Within the first year at the new world, we faced many
problems. Winters were harsh, growing crops was
difficult, and we were homesick. Once we built our
homes, we were able to create fires to keep warm.
Squanto and Samoset helped teach us new tricks to be
successful in growing crops, and we cured our
homesickness by maintaining traditions, like playing “I
Spy” and other games.
