Do you believe in magic? Well, to understand my story, you
must believe in a little magic because this story is about my
magical family.
It all began on April 5, 1989 at my Sweet Sixteen birthday
party. I invited five people in my class at school to come to my
party, but unfortunately, the only one that showed up was
Ashley. She and I met in kindergarten and we've been best
friends ever since. I know what you must be thinking, that poor
child, only one person came to her party.

But, it wasn't like that at all. Since I've never been
much of a social person, I enjoyed my party with only
my best friend there. And besides, I had bigger things
on my mind that day, things far greater than a birthday
party. I had just turned sixteen and it was time for my
mother to hand down our family pendant.
I had wanted the pendant since the first time I
noticed it dangling from my mother's neck as she
tucked me into bed one night when I was only four.
When I asked her if I could wear it then, she only said,
"You must be sixteen before I can give this one to
you. You see, Ivy, this pendant holds magic inside that
protects the one who wears it."

me want it all the more. But, my mother had told
me that it had been handed down in her family to
the oldest girl on her sixteenth birthday for
generations, so I had to wait for it.
It had not been easy, but I had waited since I was
four years old for that birthday. I asked my mother
many times before hoping that she would give in and
let me have it early, but she'd always say,
"If I give it to you before you are sixteen, Ivy, it
will lose its magic and never work again." So, as
difficult as it had been, I waited. So, you can see why
friends showing up for my party were irrelevant when
I, Ivy Crillington, was about to have magic.

After Ashley had gone home from my party, my mother
gently placed the pendant in my hand. When I looked up at
her, she had the most serious look upon her face. It was
then that I realized that there was more to the pendant than
she had told me.
She told me that the pendant had enormous powers, and
that it would take time for me to adapt to the pendant and
for it to get use to me wearing it.
"Well of course it does." I told her. "If it's magical, it
must have powers."
"But Ivy, you do not understand. In some ways, the
pendant has a mind of its own and it will protect you at all
cost."

"But, what do you mean it will protect me at all costs?
That sounds awesome, mom!"
"But sometimes it is not so awesome, because it has the
ability to hurt people in ways they do not deserve. So while
the pendant will protect you, it is most important that you
take it off, Ivy, when ever you get angry or disappointed
with someone. Do you understand?"
"Yes, mother. If I get angry with someone at school, the
pendant will sense it and come to my rescue."
"Yes but in a bad way, Ivy, so please guard your
thoughts.''
"I promise to take it off if I have bad feelings toward
anyone, mom. Just let me enjoy the moment. I've waited so
long for this pendant."

I left for school the next morning excited to show Ashley the
pendant. However, before I reached the doors of the school,
Katie from Hades stopped me on the sidewalk.
"You're early this morning, Ivy. So what's up?" Katie asked.
"None of your bees wax, Katie." I answered.
"Everything is my bees wax around here, Ivy. Are you
actually talking smack to me?"
"Move out of my way!" She snarled.
"Make me!" I shouted as Katie's friends gathered around her.
My heart raced with a mixture of anger and fear, but before I
could respond, a swarm of wasps showed up out of nowhere and
encircled Katie and her friends. They screamed and started
running around swatting at the wasps as they stung them all
many times all over their bodies. Katie had to go to the hospital
because she was allergic to wasps.

After all the excitement calmed down and the students went
inside. I looked down at the pendant resting on my chest and
noticed that the three rubies had lost their color. They had turned
completely clear like diamonds.
"Could my pendant have possibly caused all those bees to
attack Katie and her friends?" I wondered to myself as I watched
the color slowly return to the rubies in the pendant.
Confused, I walked down the hallway to the science lab.
Unfortunately I was late and could not sit with Ashley, so I had
to sit beside Tanner. He thinks he's all that, so I'm not smart
enough to be his science partner, and as soon as I sat down, Mr.
James started giving out our science tests from the previous
week. Of course Tanner had to compare our test scores in front
of the whole class. He made a 97, while I only made a 72. I tried
desperately to control my feelings, but I noticed the rubies were
fading again. Mr. James got called to the office, so he instructed
us to begin working on our science projects until he returned.

Everything would have been fine if Tanner had just
started working on the project, but instead, he just kept
making fun of me.
"Ivy, with those clumsy hands of yours, you'll probably
drop the beaker and break it, so sit back and see how it's
done." He pridefully remarked as he snatched the beaker
from my hand.
Tanner lifted the beaker and began to slowly pour
glycerin in it. He turned toward some of his friends to show
off while holding the beaker over the top of the snake
aquarium. Just as he started to brag on his unique
capabilities, the beaker slipped right out of his hand and
fell into the aquarium.

"Oh, dip stick!" Tanner yelled out as everyone in the
class started laughing.
"So how are you planning on getting that beaker out of
there, Tanner?" Josh joked. "You better get it out before
Mr. James gets back.
Tanner lowered his hand slowly down into the snake
aquarium to retrieve the beaker, but before he could pull
his hand back out, the snake bit him. Everyone in the class
went crazy. In a panic, Josh cut the strap from his book bag
and tied it tightly around Tanner's arm above the snake bite.
Another student called 911 from her cell, and for the
second time that day, emergency services were called out to
our school.

I gazed down at the pendant, and as I suspected, the
rubies had once again turned clear. Fearful that someone
would notice that the necklace was changing, I turned it
over so that the back of the pendant was facing my
classmates. I then slipped out of science class during all the
fuss right before the bell rang. I went straight to my second
period math class hoping that I could get a seat at the back
of the class to stay away from everyone. That was the only
way that I could control my thoughts.
After everyone arrived in math class, Mrs. Morrison
began the class by putting our assignments up on the board.
I sat quietly in my seat and didn't talk to anyone. When
class ended, all was well and no one had been hurt.

Merging into the hallway with the crowd, no one even
noticed me. I went by my locker and changed my books
out without even trying to hook up with Ashley to go to
social studies. We always met at our lockers and walked to
class together, but on this day, I found it best to keep to
myself. The pendant was so sensitive that it could tell if I
was the least bit upset, and when the rubies changed,
something bad usually followed. This was not the magic
that I had in mind.
Ashley walked into social studies and slipped into the
desk beside me.
"So, where were you? I waited for you by the lockers,
but you never showed. Are you mad or something?" She
asked. "Where's the pendant that your mom gave you?"
