I went to horse camp during Spring Break
at Sundance Springs Ranch in Shingle
Springs, California. I was there for five
days, from 9:30 to 2:30 each day. My
instructors were Miss Julie and Miss Sarah.
We did lots of fun things.

Every morning, we cleaned the horse stalls. We took
long rakes and scooped the poop and pee. We put it in
a wheelbarrow and took it to a pile outside the barn.
My instructor told us that when the pile was full, she
would take her tractor and push it down the hill. We
put fresh shavings in the stalls. Horses with broken legs
need more shavings so they won’t fall.

We fed the horses horse cookies and grass. The cookies
were made out of oats, gumdrops, and other horse food.
When you feed a horse, you have to keep your hand flat
and take it to their mouth. Don’t wiggle your fingers
while feeding the horse, or the horse might think your
finger is a carrot and bite it off!

We also groomed the horses and shaved a pony. To
groom a horse, you first let it smell your brush or other
tool so it knows what you’re doing. You need to brush
the horse in its hair growth pattern. Never stand
behind or under a horse because it might accidentally
kick you or jump on your head. We shaved a pony
because it had too much hair. I accidentally gave her a
little cut, and felt bad, but she didn’t seem to mind. I
gave her a big kiss.

Before we rode the horses, we walked them from the
barn to the arena. When you’re leading a horse, you
should never put the reins around your wrist. If the
horse bolts, your hand could come off! If you know how
to fold your belt in martial arts, that’s how you fold the
reins. It’s like a figure eight with the layers side by
side.
