She dreamed of growing wings, this girl. This girl the other orphans
called "strange", or "odd". She wasn't ordinary, she was unique. She
was an angel, figuratively speaking of course. Amelia; the name of a
girl who wished to fly. You'll see, she would argue, someday;
someday I will grow wings. And I will fly until I reach the puffy
clouds in the sky. They doubted her. Called her different, insane. She
knew she was special, a girl who could do anything if only she
believed. She longed to leave the orphanage, go and fly away with her
parents. If only it was possible.
"Amelia, do you have something to show us?" Her orphanage's
teacher, Ms. Elizabeth, asked. Amelia clutched her doll with the curly
blonde hair. She looked at the ground and sighed.
"The clouds are out. Which means I should be out." Amelia said
sadly, in her gentle voice. She was a dusty portrait sitting upon a
lonely shelf. I am like my mommy, she thought, I will fly like a bird.

Ms. Elizabeth approached Amelia, stroked her hair and lead her to her
seat. "I'm sorry, Ms. Elizabeth." She said, a tear rolling down her cheek. Ms.
Elizabeth sighed, dried her cheek with her thumb, and smiled.
"You'll be out soon." Ms. Elizabeth said, pointing at the window that
revealed the outdoors where the playground sat atop a blanket of sand.
"I want to be a bird." Amelia sighed, her staring longingly out the
window. "And you will all see I can fly." She said meekly. The other
orphans giggled and one whispered, she's so stupid. Ms. Elizabeth shot a
look of hate at the child, a girl with black pigtails.
"And soon you shall be." Ms. Elizabeth smiled. "I promise, you'll fly as
high as the eagles." Amelia looked into Ms. Elizabeth's eyes, hope traveled
through her body.
"You really think so?" Amelia asked, smiling. Her cheeks turning a bright
red.
"Yes." That moment changed everything for Amelia. From then on she
believed she could fly... Until she did.

7 years later... Amelia didn't know what to
do, she had missed her chance of becoming a
daughter. Her foster parents didn't want her after
what she had said. I hate you. Three words that
changed everything. She sat on the floor, her bare
knees touching the cold tiled floor. "Why?" She
wept. Her bun was starting to come undone. A
sharp pain went through her spine. She yelped.
"Ow!" She cried. A bright light shown from her
back. "What's happening?!" Wings started to
protrude from her shoulder blades. "Stop!" The
pain was unbearable. Two white wings flapped out.
It was the most painful thing she ever had felt.
She collapsed to the ground. She sobbed tears of
pain.

Amelia slowly closed her eyes, her body limp. She
slumped and fell down, her head hitting the wooden
deck atop the large sea in front of her Orphanage. She
slowly fell into a deep heavenly sleep, her memories
traveling through her mind's eye.
She smelt the wheat and fresh green grass around
her. Her mother was singing a song that Amelia
recognized. "Over the hills and through the woods, a
blue bird sings. A vast sea of evergreen, but yet there's
not much to see..." Amelia watched a butterfly land on
a small dandelion planted in the field. I want to fly.
Amelia thought to herself, examining the insect.

Amelia lifted her head, searching throughout the
foggy night. "Hello?" She called out. A sharp pain
went through her back as the last bit of her wing
escaped her left shoulder blade. "Ow!" She cried. Her
back went numb for a moment. She took a deep
breath, steadied herself, and tried to control her stiff
wings. I can fly, she thought, I will fly. Far away
from this place. Amelia breathed in the fog, letting
exasperated breaths escape her mouth.
She flapped her wings. She curled her wings
around her body, stroking the silky feathers. They
reminded her of an eagle's. An eagle's. She thought.
