Once upon a time, Cinderella, a former peasant,
was to become the Princess of the Kingdom.
Her future husband, the Prince, and his parents,
the Queen and King, held a huge celebration in
honour of their engagement.
After their marriage, Cinderella and the Prince
were meant to take over as the new Queen and King.

Cinderella noticed that despite the party,
none of the servants in the castle seemed
very happy.
She also could not seem to get the
Prince’s attention away from his friends,
so Cinderella decided to find out what was wrong.

“Hello, I’m Cinderella,” she said.
“Oh, hello, yes,” the servant girl said with a curtsey.
“Oh, please don’t do that,” laughed Cinderella.
“I am not a Princess, yet.
And even then, I don’t think I like people curtseying at me.
What is your name?”
“I’m Amelia,” replied the servant girl.
“Amelia, you do not seem very happy.
What is the matter?” asked Cinderella.
“Oh, it’s nothing. I am very happy for you and
your future husband,” said Amelia, faking a smile.
“No, please don’t lie to be polite. I saw you looking sad. I saw
everyone looking sad,” said Cinderella.

Amelia realized she could trust Cinderella.
She told Cinderella that nobody was sad, they were tired.
“Servants work everyday,” said Amelia. “We do not get
any time off to spend with our families
and some of us have been working
here for over ten years.”

Amelia’s story touched Cinderella.
It reminded her of when she was forced to
take care of her stepmother’s house without
any breaks and how miserable that made her.
Now that she was away from her stepmother’s home,
Cinderella was much happier!
Cinderella had never had so much free time in her life!
Although she was happy that she no longer
had to spend all her time cleaning,
Cinderella found her new life a little boring.
She decided to help Amelia clean up after the party.

Amelia was shocked that a girl who was about
to marry a Prince wanted to help her and refused.
Cinderella would not take Amelia's polite
'no thank you' for an answer.
She took a broom and began sweeping.

“Cinderella!” shouted the King. “What are you doing?!”
“I’m sweeping,” replied Cinderella.
Amelia looked worried.
“But why?!” asked the Queen.
“Amelia was tired, so I offered to help,” said Cinderella.
“Who is Amelia?” asked the Queen.
“Why, she’s standing right there!” said Cinderella,
pointing to Amelia.

“Her?!” said the Queen.
“Well, I certainly see what’s happened here!”
said the King. “That servant girl has tricked
our poor Cinderella into doing the work for her.
Poor, naive, sweet Cinderella.
You will be punished for this!” he yelled, pointing at Amelia.
“Wait!” cried Cinderella. “If you are going
to punish anyone, punish me. As I’ve decided
to give Amelia, and the rest of the servants,
the week off from servant duties.”
“You have?!” said the King, the Queen, and Amelia.

“Yes, you see I have worked all my life
and it made me miserable. Which is exactly
what is happening to Amelia and the other servants,"
said Cinderella
“That may be so, Cinderella, but you do not have
the power to grant people vacations. Only I do,”
said the King.
“Please let them have a vacation,” said Cinderella.
“But if I give them a vacation, who will
clean my castle?” asked the King.
Cinderella handed him the broom. “You will.”

“I will?” asked the King.
“It’s only for a week. And I can show you how,”
said Cinderella. “And when the servants come back,
they will have more energy and get things done
quicker. But, only if you make them work
for a few hours day, instead of twenty-four.”
“I will… consider this,” said the King,
but Cinderella was smiling as she already
knew his answer.

Amelia was so happy to go on vacation and
Cinderella was happy to see her happy.
Amelia and Cinderella hugged goodbye and
Amelia said she would see her in a week.
Now that that problem had been taken care of,
Cinderella had another problem on her mind…

Cinderella went to go see the Prince.
She found the Prince with his friend Audric.
Cinderella said hello and asked Audric
if she could speak with the Prince alone.
Audric left and Cinderella’s face turned serious.
“I have a question for you,” said Cinderella.
“Yes?” asked the Prince.
