Princess Ariel and Prince Eric live in a small castle by
the sea. The front of the castle opens up to the village
square with all its vendors and flowers. The back of the
castle opens up to the sea. Ariel can sit on the balcony,
look out at the sea and be sure she can see the castle of
her father, King Triton. She knows this is silly though.
She now lives ten thousand leagues above her old
home, and the water seems to be getting darker in color
with each passing day. Besides, who needs the salty
sea water to only swim through, when you can have the
seaside air to run, jump, walk, and skip through?

After saying good-bye to her father- and getting used to
her new legs of course- Ariel opens up a music school
for the children of the village. Choir practice under the
sea was boring, but above on land, there is much better
instruments and the people can even dance to Princess
Ariel’s music! With their feet! Partners dance together
for hours to her beautiful voice. Everything is better on
land than under the sea.

In choosing to become a human and live in the village
with Prince Eric, Princess Ariel has no choice but to
leave her father forever. He must stay below sea level
to manage his kingdom because the sea and the village
are not friends. However, Scuttle, Princess Ariel’s
seagull friend and expert on human objects, lets
Princess Ariel know when Flounder wants to say hi or
has made her a present. Princess Ariel is usually much
too busy to talk to Flounder but today Scuttle comes
rushing up to Princess Ariel, telling her it is important
and she must come right away. Princess Ariel follows
Scuttle to the rocks where Flounder is waiting.

Flounder’s usual excitement to see his friend Princess
Ariel is masked by a very unusual frown. Wrapped
around his tail is four plastic rings and a plastic bag is
covering one of his fins. “Ariel! Ariel! We can’t swim
around anymore without getting caught in something
and there’s nets being cast down every day! And what is
this?” asks a panicked Flounder, looking down at the
plastic bag on his fin. “I can’t seem to shake it off.”
Scuttle, the expert on human objects, expertly states:
“Why that there is a whatado clinkerclacker. Humans
wear them as masks. Isn’t that right Ariel?”

“Oh Flounder, it’s plastic,” says Princess Ariel. “It must be
blowing out of the village and into the sea.”
“That’s not all Ariel,” says Flounder, near tears. “The water
is changing colors. It’s so dark and dirty it’s hard to see
where we are swimming down there and it’s getting hard to
breathe. And the ships! They look the same as Prince
Eric’s did!”
“Two big ships leaving early every morning, Ariel,” says
Scuttle. “Two bigs ships coming back late every night. I
see them unloading their nets by the docks.”
“Oh no,” says Princess Ariel to Scuttle and Flounder.
“Don’t worry. I will fix this, somehow.”

Princess Ariel runs back into the village, searching for
Prince Eric. She finds him buying some fresh shrimp
from a vendor at the market. “Eric! You have to come
quick! We need to tell the village to stay out of the sea!
They are hurting my family and friends. They are
hurting the merpeople and fish of the sea!” cries
Princess Ariel.
Prince Eric puts an arm around Princess Ariel and the
vendor pushes his cart further into the market.

“Ariel, it’s nothing to worry about. You are a human now,
remember? And the humans want to make a vacation
island right in the middle of the sea. This just requires a
little changing of the landscape first.”
Ariel thinks about this for a moment. She is a human
now. She does not have a tail anymore and can no
longer breathe underwater. But the humans are
dumping oil and plastic into the sea. They are fishing her
friends out of their homes and hurting her old home. The
sea is still the home she came from. The sea is more a
part of her than the village she lives in now. She just
needs to make the village understand this.
