"Once upon a time, there was a dinosaur
named "Velly". Velly was a velociraptor. He
was quite small, so he wanted a smaller
name. Also, Jaxon's grampa couldn't
pronounce the word velociraptor, so Velly was
a good name for him.

Velly lived with lots of other dinosaurs who roamed around
playing, and looking for food. Sometimes one of them would
"TOOT" very loudly, and Velly would laugh loudly. Each kind of
dinosaur had their very own TOOT sound. Sometimes at night he
would dream that he was in an orchestra of tubas and kazoos,
tooting away...

But Velly was very curious about the world, and wanted to see
new things. Hmmmmm, how would a rather small velociraptor go
out to see a world he had never seen? All of his life, the only thing
he had seen was the dinosaur world.
He began to think about travel. How would he get beyond
anything he ever knew?

As he rambled around, looking for food, he came across the
word "transport" written with cleverly placed bones. He couldn't
read words, but his grampa was very good at reading bones. He
went to his grampa, who was a very wise gentleman.
Velly's grampa looked at the bone word, and after making
little sounds deep in his throat, communicated to his dinosaur
grandson Velly that the bone word was "transport". Dinosaurs
don't really talk, but act out the meaning of things. It was kind of
like dinosaur charades. He acted out the meaning of "transport"
by lifting Velly up, and quickly moving from place to place.

Quickly, Velly understood. To
transport, he would have to take a
ride! He was confused and excited
at the same time. That night, he
dreamed of those large creatures
that flew above them, going from
place to place.
Some people call the flying
creatures 'pterodactyls'. Velly
started thinking..."I will have to find
a pterodactyl, and make friends with
it!"

Velly wandered through the valley where the dinosaurs lived, but this
time he was looking up into the sky. Large, dark shadows would
sometimes cross over him, and when he looked up, it was a pterodactyl
flying above, large enough to block out the sun!
Velly had often dreamed about what it might be like to fly, to soar
through the air, to see things from up there.
Just as he was becoming dizzy by the pattern of flying shadows
crossing quickly over the ground, he thought he heard a curious sound
nearby. he didn't know if something was laughing or crying! As he
cautiously walked toward the sound, he saw a medium sized pterodactyl
sitting on a medium sized boulder in a medium sized field. The odd sound
became louder.

Velly approached slowly, and the creature didn't seem to notice. It
definitely was making sounds like laughing, and then crying, and
laughing again. Velly was worried that the medium sized pterodactyl
wouldn't understand his velociraptor accent, but he went ahead and
spoke anyway.
"Are you ok?" he asked.
The pterodactyl's large beak mouth opened as he looked at Velly and
said "Of course I am. I mean of course I am NOT. Of course that is what
I mean, that of course I am not."
Velly understood every single word that the pterodactyl spoke, but he
had no idea what he meant. He was very confused.
"Look my velociraptor...you can call me Pterry", said the pterodactyl.
"My grandfather can't say pterodactyl very well, so I just have everyone
call me Pterry."

Velly started laughing and said, "I was just about to tell you
to call me "Velly" for the same reason - my grandfather can't
pronounce velociraptor very well, so I just have everyone call
me Velly.
Both dinosaurs began laughing at this funny situation, until
Velly noticed that Pterry was also crying!
Pterry explained that to pterodactyls, crying and laughing
are the same thing. He said that when you heard a pterodactyl
crying, you knew it was laughing, and when you heard it
laughing, you also knew it was crying.
This was all very strange to Velly, but he realized he was
exploring, just like he'd hoped for. He was seeing the world he
had never before seen. This made him feel very dreamy, almost
as if he was flying......to new places.
He was startled awake suddenly by a very odd sound.
He looked to see what it was - and there before him
was his new friend, Pterry, flapping his wings! Velly
could now feel the wind from the moving wings
on his face!
