PLOT
The book opens with the Baudelaire orphans and Count Olaf on a boat heading away from the Hotel Denouement. After a storm, the Baudelaires are welcomed on an island by a girl named Friday, while Count Olaf is shunned. The island manager, Ishmael, introduces the Baudelaires to the islanders and their customs. Ishmael shoots Count Olaf at the stomach, penetrating the helmet with the Medusoid Mycelium, which infects the entire population of the island. At the end of the book, the Baudelaires decide to sail away from the island and return to the rest of the world after the death of Count Olaf and Kit. Snicket reveals the name of their boat is shared with Kit's child's name, and therefore the Baudelaire orphan's mother;"Beatrice".

The Orphans and Olaf wash up on in island after being pushed away around by the current huge hurricane. The island ends up being filled with people who also like the Baudelaires, were in hurricanes.

Count Olaf is captured by Ishmael, after burning his house, and the Orphans are accepted on to the island after telling their series of unfortunate events from the past. Later the Baudelaires' are told about an plan to leave the island.

Climax
The Orphans go to the other side of the island and gain supplies for the militia. The Orphans find history about the Island, and learn that their parents were once rulers of the Island. Later Olaf escapes his cage and is harpooned by Ishmael, falling to his death.

Falling Actions
1. The harpoon that was struck into Olaf's body hit the diving mask that contained a deadly fungus which spreaded halfway around the island .
2. Klaus remembers that apples could cure the disease but by that time, the militia already took off with the disease in the boats.

Resolution
The Orphans eat the apples and cure the disease inside them, leaving the island to go back to the real world.

The setting of the book takes place at an unknown island, and the time of when the events took place is unknown as it is never mentioned in the book.

Count Olaf is the Baudelaire's second ex-guardian, he treats them in a very inhuman manner, and he is out to steal the fortune that their late parents left for the children. He finally gets killed at the end of the story.

Violet is the oldest of all of her siblings. She is one of the three protagonists in the story, and helps the siblings to overcome the problems they face with her inventing and engineering skills.
