This book is dedicated to... My Mom who read me this book as a child. I always enjoyed the story and happy ending. I hated to see the sad duckling, but now love when I see such beautiful swans.

The Very Ugliest Duckling
2
Once upon a time, in a beautiful countryside, a duck sat on her nest waiting for her eggs to hatch.
But she was beginning to get tired of waiting for her little ones to come out of their shells.

3
The mother duck watched the other ducks swimming in the cool river, and having fun sliding down the muddy river bank into the water...
"Splash, Splash, Splash!"

4

" Just once I would love to join the fun," she thought.... So she stepped from her nest and made her way to her snug and safe spot on the river bank.

5

But from overhead an ugly bird swooped down from the sky and landed on her nest.
The mother duck joined the flock and chased the evil ugly bird away.

Hurry, hurry, those other birds will eat all of your eggs!
6
Shamefully, the mother duck counted her eggs...
"One, two, three, four... good they're all here! Wait, this one isn't mine!"
But she thought, maybe this new egg had been hiding the whole time. She sat upon her eggs once more.

7
At last, one after the other, her eggs began to crack.
From each egg came a yellow fuzzy creature.
But one egg had yet to crack!
She waiting one, two, three days more. An older, wiser duck told her it was time to give up on the last egg because not every egg may hold a baby.

Peep, Peep!
Quack, Quack!

8
But just as the mother duck began to cry, the final egg broke open. A young bird crept out. But it was colored unlike the others.
It was by far the very ugliest duckling of all.

9
What a strange looking duckling she came to be. On occasion, when a duck was feeling miserable about itself, it would become spiteful and peck at the very ugliest duckling.

Leave her alone! She isn't very pretty, and is nothing like the others, but she will always have a home with me!

10

The mother duck loved all of her babies, including the very ugliest duckling, but as time passed, and the other ducklings grew more beautiful, and swam more swiftly, she couldn't help but worry about the fate and future of the very ugliest duckling.

11
One day, the mother duck decided to seek out the old wise goose she had heard of that lived in a swamp nearby.
She hoped the old wise goose would know what should be done about the very ugliest duckling.

12

"Family is family, no matter their feathers mother duck. Give the duckling time to discover herself, sometimes young ones just need time to spread their wings and fly."
13
At the same time the very ugliest duckling wandered alone, while the other ducklings played with their friends in the river.
She felt very alone, and sad inside because they didn't want to play with her.

I hope that someday I'll meet someone that looks like me.
14
But all of a sudden, she heard squawking that she had never heard before. Flustered, she hid behind a tree as a strange looking flock passed her.
