On the way to the saloon, Charlie hears loud singing coming from the outskirts of town. He says to himself, “After I buy bottle, I see what singing is about.” A sign warns that Indians will not be served in the saloon. Charlie talks an old town derelict into getting him a bottle of drink. When the man returns with the bottle, Charlie pays him and walks quickly to an alley adjoining the saloon. He slides down beside a sleeping hound dog who found relief in the shadow of the saloon from the blaring noon day heat.
Taking the bottle up to his lips, he thirstily gulps the fire water and moans, “Ah good drink.” The old hound dog lifts herself to her feet and wags her tail as Charlie pats her on the head. About that same time he hears the music again that first got his attention when he rode into town. “I go, my friend.” Giving the old hound one last touch, he stands to his feet. Charlie staggers back to his horse and starts to put the bottle in the saddle bag but instead slides the bottle in his shirt. He quickly mounts his horse and rides toward the sound of singing.
Evangelist Joshua Thomas is holding a tent revival in town, one of many across the western frontier. Little Charlie stumbles into the back of the gospel tent in a drunken stupor. He staggers up to the last row of seats and, missing the chair, sits down with a thump on the sawdust floor. As he hits the ground the half-empty bottle falls out of his partially buttoned sky blue shirt. The preacher’s voice rings out like a booming cannon, “What think ye of Christ? Who’s Son is He? Your eternal destiny depends upon how you answer that question.”
With that said, he runs to where Little Charlie lies, clutching his leg while blood oozes from the fang marks on his hand. The preacher, seeing the expired viper, grasps it by the tail, and paces back and forth in the center aisle, holding it up for all to see. "This deadly snake, like the devil, wants to sneak up and bite us and fill us with his evil poison. Jesus Christ," he thunders, "is your only antidote."
“Cut deep Janie and squeeze out the blood while I help hold him. Janie is not squeamish at all and has done this numerous times before. Acting quickly with surgeon style skill, she performs the life saving technique. We need to get his man to Doc Carter’s office immediately. Four burly men lift Little Charlie to his feet and hoist him on to a blanket like stretcher. “Sing congregation. Raise your hands in praise to the Most High God, the Lovely Lord Jesus Christ. This sickness is not unto death. Pray for this poor, wretched boy that he may be pulled from the devil’s grasp.
