To: James Thurber

Once upon a time there was a gloomy castle on a lonely hill, where thirteen clocks never moved.
There lived a mean, cold Duke with his niece the princess Saralinda, who was warm everyday.

There was a singer who was in the streets singing to the folk in the town. The singer was a prince in disguise and he had come to marry the Princess.

The prince went into the castle to marry the princess but the duke stopped him and told him he had to get 1,000 gems and start all 13 clocks before he could marry the princess.

The prince asked an old man for help and he said that he could take him to a women who cried rubies, and as he and the old man were leaving a rose fell from the castle window.

The prince and the old man climbed mountains and went across plains, just so the prince could get the gems.

Soon the prince and the man reached a house on the top of the hill with the old women, but when they knocked a beautiful women answered.

The young women let them in and she said to them, I do not cry anymore, I have listened to sad stories and happy stories, so if you are here to get gems you should go away.

The old man tried as hard as he could to make the women cry or laugh and while the old man was doing that, the prince was looking around and he found a bucket filled to the rim with gems.
