Symbolism
Using words to express ideas that are not used in a literal sense.
Example: She said, "Life is a roller-coaster."
The author's purpose for using this is to describe how something looks or how someone feels in a more indirect context.

It's our new roller-coaster - LIFE!!

Irony
Saying something that actually means the opposite
Example: Yes, I stole your phone, because totally don't have one of my own.
The author's purpose for using irony is to have a comedic effect.
Do you have my phone?
Yeah, because I have my own phone

Alliteration
The same letter or sound at the beginning of words put closely together
Example: Sally sells seashells by the seashore
An author would use this because it will focus a reader's attention on that portion of text, and in a poem it could create a certain rhythm.

Hello, Miss Smith, would you like some sea shells?
Oh, sure. Why Sally, you're so sweet.

Imagery
To visually describe something or using figurative language to describe something
Example: They walked like a baby deer
An author would use imagery to describe how something looks, moves, talks, etc. so that the reader would understand what is happening/what they look like

Ummmm... I think they used imagery and figurative language... I don't think they meant it literally.
