This an example for students' figurative language assessment in unit 1.

Kim and Stephanie were walking home from school when they noticed something out of the ordinary.

There was a giant corgi standing right in front of them.

"Whoa!" Kim exclaimed. "That dog is as tall as a skyscraper!"

"What are you talking about? It's a dog... not a giant building," Stephanie said.

Kim replied, "No, Stephanie. It was a figure of speech. A simile, actually."
Stephanie looked even more confused than before.

Kim continued to explain once they successfully maneuvered around the gigantic corgi. "A simile compares something to another while using words 'like' or 'as.'"
Kim and Stephanie continued on their trail home. It was starting to get dark outside.
Stephanie thought about coming up with a simile to tell Kim how dark it was.
"It's like dark, and as a matter of fact, I stubbed my toe on a tree. How'd you like that simile?"
