I Am Poem: Hear Me Roar
I am a believer in equality
I wonder if people recognize the irony
I hear a singular masculine generic pronoun
I see and hear hypocrites
I want equal pay
I am an advocate for change
I pretend people understand me
I feel unappreciated for my strengths
I worry about girl’s self perception
I cry for the women who have been stifled throughout the years
I am frustrated, angry, and appalled by people’s ability to ignore
I understand patriarchy, capitalism, and domination
I say “she,” “her,” and “humankind”
I dream that one day women will be treated as true citizens with voices
I try to educate people about sexism
I hope mother’s labor will be recognized and valued one day
I am a woman hear me roar!

Bio Poem: Ms. Bachmann
Ms.,
Fierce, confident, determined like a lioness hunting for her cub’s survival
Aunt of Carlea, Julius, and Giovanna
Lover of caffeine, chocolate, and cleanliness
Who feels elated when her students perform well, exhausted after period five, and thankful to be alive
Who needs another vacation, time to read, and months in the sun
Who gives her time, effort, and assistance to eleventh grade students
Who fears horrible essays, ill children, and filthy toilets
Who would like to see the Pyramids of Giza, Jordan, and Brazil
Resident of Santana High School
Bachmann
The hanging fog masks my view
The frost cracks beneath my steps
Weapons unleash their fire
Bullets hiss past my face
Panicked breathing fills my ears
Skin burning, skin peeling
Tiered bodies block my path
Searing pain
The smell of dirt
The grey December day has begun
Select words are from Gary Soto's poem "Oranges"
Re-Creation Poem: Lost Souls
Re-Creation Poem: Lost Souls
Response Example: The setting of my re-creation poem, "Lost Souls," is World War I. The protagonist is a soldier shocked and confused in the middle of battle making his way through the realities of war. With the phrase, "bullets hissed passed," I used onomatopoeia to make the audience feel and hear the constant artillery in battle. I used repetition and consonance when I described the "skin burning, skin peeling" to make the audience feel the searing effects of mustard gas. The visual imagery of "tiered bodies" was to evoke an image of corpses blocking movement through a trench. I selected diction such as "hanging fog," "frost cracks," "smell of dirt," and "grey December" to describe the weather and how is was freezing, miserable, and with minimal visibility. The purpose of the poem was to show a soldier's experience during warfare.

At eight forty-six in the morning.
It was at eight forty-six in the morning.
A suicide mission had been planned
at eight forty-six in the morning.
The plane was overthrown by terrorists
at eight forty-six in the morning.
The north tower stood, holding innocents
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Onlooking faces crumbled with the impact
at eight forty-six in the morning.
The ground shook beneath passerby
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Manhattan streets stood completely still
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Sirens screamed, “Let me help”
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Papers drifted, like snowflakes to the ground
at eight forty-six in the morning.
The tower looked like a lit cigarette
at eight forty-six in the morning.
From billows of smoke, bodies fell
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Stylistic Imitation Poem:
We Will Never Forget
So many lost and still more to be found
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Crowds of strangers gathered, and cried
at eight forty-six in the morning.
News crews stood silent at the site
at eight forty-six in the morning.
In every home television sets watched
at eight forty-six in the morning.
as our sense of security was lost
at eight forty-six in the morning.
The president's address turned on high
at eight forty-six in the morning.
with our desperate need to know what had happened and why
at eight forty-six in the morning.
America was forever changed
at eight forty-six in the morning.
Nothing would ever be the same
at eight forty-six in the morning.
We will always remember
at eight forty-six in the morning.
we will never forget
at eight forty-six in the morning.

Definition Poem: Gosh Darn It!
Tragedy: [traj-i-dee], noun, plural tragedies,
a lamentable, dreadful, or fatal event or affair; calamity; disaster:
When my alarm screams;
When my hair fights the bun structure like a boxer
And I have to use a billion bobby pins;
Watered down coffee; Potent, strong coffee;
When I put too much creamer and when I did not put enough;
Rolling eyes as I snatch cell phones like a thief;
When I realized I forgot to copy the handout I need for a class starting in 10 minutes;
When the internet is slow and I cannot show the presentation I worked endless hours on;
When a student asks me a question I JUST answered!

The lim’erick packs laughs anatomical
In space that is quite economical,
But the good ones I’ve seen
So seldom are clean,
And the clean ones so seldom are comical.
