TO ALL THE DENTISTS
IN THE WORLD:
THANK YOU

My mom had been noticing some things wrong with my tooth. One of them appeared to be transparent. You could see all the blood underneath. The other tooth was really loose and had another tooth growing under it, apparently pushing it out.
My mom and I didn't have dentist appointments until August, but my mom called the dentist and told them about what was happening to my teeth. They made an appointment for that Tuesday.
I was really, really scared. I cried for days and days, thinking about the Tuesday to come. What if I had a cavity? What if I had to get a tooth pulled? None of my parents knew what was wrong. It was horrible.
On that Tuesday, I wasn't as scared. My dad had told me about the time he went to the dentist to get his wisdom teeth pulled. Wisdom teeth are your very back molars. They usually don't come in until you're 16 or 17.
My dad said it wasn't bad. He said it hurt a little bit but your gums felt wayyyy better when they were done. I tried to believe him, but when my mom drove up to the local dental care that Tuesday, all my fears came back. Oh, I forgot to mention, I didn't usually go to that dentist. My mom had switched me over to this dentist, and this was my first time going there. So now I might have a cavity, AND I didn't know the dentist who was going to be operating on me!
When my name was called, I was practically hysterical. "I'm only nine years old! I'm not ready to die!" I thought. But I followed my mom into the dental exam and took a seat in the big white chair.
I was breathing very rapidly. Not hyperventilating, but I felt like I was having a panic attack! Of course I knew the dentist was a professional. It wasn't really the dentist I was scared of. It was the fact that nobody knew what was wrong with me.
The nurse came in and gave me a little thing that looked like a red microphone wrapped in plastic. She had me bite down on it, and it took X-rays of my teeth. So far, so good...
But then the dentist came in and started joking. Not ordinary, "why did the chicken cross the road" jokes. Jokes about people tying their loose teeth to a string, tying the string to a doorknob, and... well, you know. He even told one about a kid who attached his string to a rocket and blasted it off! Wonder how that felt.
I was crying and terrified now.
He assured me that I was okay. He said that he knew what was wrong with my tooth, just by looking at my X-rays. He said that the transparent tooth was actually a baby tooth! On the next page, I'll explain to you what was actually wrong with my tooth........................................................................................
