This morning I woke up and I was scared. Today is the day I go to my new school in America.

My older brother Jose is going too. He says we will make new friends, but he is not smiling. I think he is scared too.

Papa walks with us from our house to our new school. Papa is happy about our new school. He says there will be lots of books and computers at my new school that my old school did not have. I miss my old school.

The school is so big it has two floors. Jose has to go upstairs with the bigger kids. I will not see him until it is time to go home. My stomach feels funny.

In my classroom all the kids are wearing different clothes. This is funny to me because at my old school we had to wear uniforms.  

The teacher smiles and talks to the class. She points to me and I hear her say my name, “Omar.” The other kids smile and say “Hi Omar.” Mama told me “Hi” means “Hola.” My stomach feels a little better.

My teacher smiles a lot but I do not know what she is saying. She gives me the same papers as the other kids.  I do not know what to do. I write my name and draw pictures. I wish someone would speak Spanish to me.
