Ally’s life was laid out like a volcano, or at least that’s what she liked to describe it as. “My life is like a volcano, peaceful, and steady for a while. Then all of sudden an explosion hits, impacting the little villages at the bottom. There are two villages at the bottom, they share a great bond. Those two villages are just me and my dad.” Ally thought. That was her theory of explaining life.
Ally and her father made home on the corner of an alley placed in downtown, Toronto. There were many cars running by, as if the cars were humans running in a race. Ally and her father were used to the loud noises that bounced around the streets.
Reliving the same day over and over again was not the best life for Ally. Their days were filled up with watching normal people have the life they never would. Ally admired seeing people wear nice clothes and eat delicious foods.

One day Ally, we will be as lucky as them.

“One day Ally, we will be as lucky as them” Her father whispered into her ear, as many children and adults gazed and glanced at them. They would spend hours observing normal people. “Then when we are like them, we will be doing the same things they do.” her father soothed her, as their eyes followed people walking by with shopping bags, piled up with stuff Ally and her father could never afford.
Whenever they were lucky, they had at least a couple coins fill their jar. A while earlier, Ally had questioned her dad, “What’s this jar for?” he then replied; “This is the jar of hope, Ally. We’d be lucky to have at least a couple coins fill this jar”.
The coins were usually used to replace the dirty, old, and ripped clothes they wore. Buying food and resources was the hardest part for them. They had to think and map out what they were going to buy. It was November 2018, and Ally knew that the volcano was about to erupt.

I'm scared,
Daddy.

It's going to be alright,
Ally, don't you worry.

A big impact was heading towards them, Ally and her father were petrified. “I’m scared, Daddy.” Ally shrieked with fear. “It’s going to be alright, Ally, don’t you worry” her father replied, while trying to hide the fearful tone in his voice. “Everything is going to be ok..”. Her father repeated many times, as the words surrounded her, with no meaning.
Ally and her father were going to have to face their most distressing, dangerous, harmful, and biggest fear of all; winter.

Soooooo Cold

Ally woke up to the sound of cars passing by. It was now mid November. Along with the coldness, Ally hated the darkness. At this time of the year, darkness of the night approached quicker that ever. Ally and her father were helplessly living on the streets, while being exposed to the darkness and the cold.
A nasty smell rose from them, as it surrounded the air. Ally’s father zipped up the filthy sweater he wore, along he wore a pair of socks, pants, two mittens, a ragged t-shirt, and a ripped hat.
As for Ally, she valued the child outfit that was donated to her a while ago. Ally scratched her filthy dark brown hair, in which her head was warmed up by a sports hat. Then, Ally adjusted her torn, fuzzy jacket that covered her like a baby blanket. “SOOOO cold,” the words flowed out of her mouth, along with a fresh, cold breath.

“I’m SOOOOOOO cold, Dad.” the o’s in “SOOOOOOO” were never ending, just like Ally’s misery. The ground rested under Ally’s weight, as well as the wind remained howling like many wolves. Every while, a store went to sleep as downtown got darker, and quieter.
Ally got more impatient every second, waiting for her dad to respond to her. “Dad?” Ally was now getting worried. “Please say something. I’m freezing.” Ally was as cold as a freezer, even the clothes she wore could not keep her warm.
Ally thought to herself, “He’s probably sleeping, I’ll try to get some rest, too.”Ally tried her best to find comfort when sleeping. Finding comfort for Ally was quite difficult. “Good night, Dad. Sweet dreams.” Ally tried her best to stay positive. Before her eyes, snow came sprouting down from the sky.

Is he sick? Is he okay?
What should I DO??

The snow landed lightly upon them, and Ally began the feel a chin down her spine. As more snow fell towards them, Ally laid down beside her father. After a couple minutes of resting, a loud, awful cough escaped from his mouth. At first there were normal coughs, then many more coughs emerged from his mouth. The coughs were vile, and as loud as they could be. Suddenly, her father felt wretched, and bent to the side.
A second before Ally could react, her father vomited. Ally was so worried, she felt bad for her father. “Is he sick? is he okay? what should I DO??” so many questions were racing through her mind. Ally moved her hand to feel her father’s forehead. She couldn’t believe it, his head was scorching! Her father had caught a bad sickness!

I love You, Ally.

Ally perched against the rock . She took her hand away from his forehead, her hand was warm. The terror and shock came over her, as couldn’t she think. Ally felt as if she were drowning the sea, not able to breathe. After a moment, she was able to let out a few words “What should I do??”.
Ally moved away from the vomit that covered the ground. She bent over to check on her poor, ill, dad. Not only was her dad suffering, she had to suffer as much as him. Who was going to comfort her? Who was going to plan how they spent the very little money they had? And most of all, who was going to take care of her????
“DAD, are you okay?!” the worriedness and anxiousness took over her voice. “UGGHHHHHHH” her dad moaned unpleasantly. “Ally, I feel awful. I am sooo sorry, Ally. I am sorry you have to live like this, I love you, and I am sorry that I cannot take care of you.”

The sun was rising, it was early morning. Ally hated seeing her dad like this, she wanted to do something helpful. There was no hope, they were already freezing to death, they had very little food, they did not have enough resources to support themselves. Ally’s dad was always good at persuading people to donate money to them.
People usually tend to donate to them because Ally’s dad had the best reasons for why they should. But now, he was sick and they had no luck. Her father was so cold that he could barely speak, he was as weak as a newborn baby. Her father could not walk, and move.
It was a while later, Ally was starving and weak, she felt worse than ever. People now just walked past Ally and her dad, as if they were ghosts. Every once in a while, but felt like a thousand years for Ally, a very kind caring person would donate some coins. Ally had given her jacket and hat to her dad, so he would feel a little bit better.

Though her dad felt cold, Ally felt even colder, but at least he was feeling better. By now, Ally had collected $3, which was not enough to buy anything. They had finished the box of crackers they bought, and the last bag of cereal that was donated to them. To survive, Ally collected some snow from the ground, put in her bottle, and warmed it up to get some water.
Surviving the couple days was horrible, it was the worst thing that could happen to anybody. Surviving on snow to get water, and having no food, while barely anybody donated money to help. Ally cried, she let out her emotions, she was all alone. Ally couldn’t do it anymore, she was almost dying, along with her father.
Ally wrapped her herself up using her weak, thin arms. Her father was as frozen as an ice cube, he now was taken care of Ally, who remained brave. Ally was brave, but not as strong and healthy like she used to be.
A while ago...

“I wish,” Ally thought attentively while staring at her father, “that fortune will smile upon us”. In a flash, Ally remembered a special moment that took place last year. About a year ago, a kind old man approached Ally and her father.
A few minutes before the man approached them, Ally had seen a bill running around on the road. Many cars were then passing by. Ally wanted more than anything to get the bill. Before she knew it, Ally found herself running towards the bill, before it could fly away. Ally ran on the the street, and caught the bill. She almost got hit by a car, but instead the car quickly pulled to a stop and honked.
Ally was filled with joy. Her legs fastly swung back and forth as she headed towards her father. When she got to her father, she proudly held up the $5 bill that she had caught. He was so happy, not only because they had $5 to spend, but also because he had raised a brave daughter.
