Chapter 1
During the Civil War, This boy named Henry wanted to join the army because he thought it would make him look heroic, dramatic, and make the girls like him, He is ready to battle but all he and the other soldiers do is sit around waiting to fight, while waiting Henry started to get scared about going out and fighting, so he made a joke to his companions saying what if they all ran away? One tall soldier, named Jim, said if everyone stays he will stay, but if everyone runs, he'll run.
Henry Was First, happy to go to war and fight and make him look brave and strong, but after sitting around with all the tension he doesn't really wanna die in war.
Sometimes I would feel like this if I am really excited about doing something like going on a roller coaster, and then I back out because I think of the worst.
Chapter 2
The Regiment continues to rest, sitting around doing nothing, while Henry is deep in his thoughts, asking himself if he will go into battle and be fine, or if he can cope with the battle when it comes. A couple days later, early in the morning, the regiment is ready to move out to a new position, A Horseman tells the Regiment to move out to the new spot. Once they are in the new spot Henry wishes he was back at the Farm, while he’s thinking a Loud soldier called Wilson walks up to have a conversation with Henry. They talk about the upcoming battle, Henry asks if he has any idea of running when the battle comes, Wilson gets mad and questions his Bravery. Henry goes to sleep with Fear in his mind that night.
Sometimes I can feel like that because I am ready to do something, but I start thinking about it, and I start to ask other people what they are thinking and I go do that thing with fear.
Chapter 3
The Regiment still rests, doing nothing, they cross a bridge and stay in a forest where they camp out for several days. On one of those mornings, the whole regiment starts running and stopping, running and stopping. They were supposedly running toward a battle, but there was no battle right there, The Regiment comes across a dead soldier, Henry tries to “Read the dead eyes to answer the question.” Henry was feeling hate toward the lieutenant keeping him in the marching rank doing nothing. He considers that if he were to die quickly, he could end his suffering. They come up onto a battle ahead of them and get ready for the fight, Wilson walks up to henry saying he expects to die in the fight, so he gives him a letter that he wants Henry to give his family.
I could relate to this because I sometimes challenge what people over me say, in my head or out loud sometimes.
Chapter 4
The whole brigade finally stops near a grove, watching other Brigades and Regiments having a battle ahead of them. They start talking about how effective Other Companies and Regiments are doing in battle, They disagree on how Effective they are and how strong the enemy is. The lieutenant of Henry’s Regiment is injured and is being treated by the Company’s captain. Officers are screaming at the soldiers to keep fighting, but many run away. Henry’s regiment watches in Fear and Awe as the other Regiment runs.
This relates to me because sometimes we scout out the people we play in Basketball the next time we play a game, and we see they how they play, and how effective they are.
Chapter 5
The Regiment is about to go into battle, Henry thinks of his days before war. One of the members say "Here they Come" and the enemy pushes towards them, Henry forgets what he was thinking about and focuses only on what is in front of him. Henry doesn't even notice what is happening around him while he keep firing. After the enemy backs away, He notices that battle he just had was a tiny part of the whole war.
This can relate to me because when there is something extremely important happening, I forget what I was thinking about and can only focus on that thing until it's finished.
Chapter 6
Henry and the other soldiers are happy about their first victory, then a shout is heard, saying "Here they come again", Henry is suprised while his old thoughts come back to him. He imagines that the enemy isn't other humans, but machines or monsters. He sees two other Regiment members drop their guns and run, as the enemy comes closer, He drops his gun and runs. While he is running he hears the general being irritated with the troops he has sent out.
I can relate to this because I sometimes think things are way worse then they actually are, like Henry is thinking they are machines or monsters.
Chapter 7
Henry continues to run from the front line even when he knows his allies have defended against the enemy's attack. He tries to make himself feel better by saying his friends were stupid to stay. He keeps thinking about how stupid they were to stay, and gets angrier. As Henry keeps running, he sees a thicket that could offer some protection, when we walks in he sees a dead soldier and starts running away from the soldier, going further away from the regiment.
If I have a different descision than someone else I could think that they were stupid to think that way or stay while I leave.
Chapter 8
The sounds of the fighting stop Henry from running, He stops and looks around because he is curious. As he makes his way back to the battle, he finds many dead soldiers on the path, and sees wounded soldiers coming back for medical help. Henry sees many soldiers and one officer, one soldier comes up and asks him where he got wounded, but he couldn't answer because he ran away.
I could see this happening with me because once I leave something, and people keep doing it, I come back looking at what they are doing.
Chapter 9
Henry walks along with the retreating soldiers, acting like he is injured. He is afraid they might notice that he ran from battle because they are looking for his Red Badge of Courage. He sees Jim Conklin stumbling on the road, Running towards him, Henry realizes that Jim is dying. Jim tells Henry that he has only one fear, being ran over by a battery on the road. So he asks Henry to move him out of the road, but he is too overcome with emotion so he can't move him, Jim runs into the field, stops, stands tall, then dies.
I could relate to this because sometimes I am so suprised by something, so I can't think of what I should do.
Chapter 10
The Tattered soldier's reaction to Jim death is of awe. He talks non-stop to Henry and calls Jim a "Jim-Dandy". Henry doesn't pay attention to him talking, until he says, "Where is your injury?" Henry tells him "Don't bother me", and walks away from the soldier. Henry wishes that he was dead and notes that he can't "keep his crime concealed in his bosom"
Sometimes when people ask me something when something bad happened I sometimes walk away or want to walk away.
Chapter 11
After leaving the tattered soldier, Henry walks up a hill and sees two groups of soldiers, one heading to the front, and one retreating. He thinks the retreating soldiers have decided to run as he did, and he senses enthusiasm from the one pushing to the front. He starts to argue with himself if he should join the troops. right when he is about to join, he thinks about how will he explain his disappearence to his regiment, so he doubts himself and loses his will to join them.
This could happen to me sometimes when I get ready to do something and then I think about how other will react.
Chapter 12
Henry notices that the advancing soldiers are running out of the woods in retreat, as they flee, they go to Henry's position. Henry grabs one and asks him why he is retreating, but he wouldn't talk to Henry. Henry wouldn't release the soldier, so he hits Henry in the head with his gun. Dazed by the blow, he couldn't concentrate on what he was doing. While running, a soldier comes up to him and notices he is from the 304th regiment. He takes Henry to his regiment's camp site, and leaves.
If I was in extreme hurry, like Henry, I would ask someone for answers, not stopping until I figure out my question.
Chapter 13
As Henry walks toward the campfire, he is stopped by Wilson, who is happy to see Henry not dead. As they walk, Henry says he got seperated from everyone, he also says he got shot in the head. The Corporal, Simpson, Hears Wilson and Henry talking and comes over to ask what happened. He tells Henry to sit, Wilson helps Henry's head wound and says that it looks more like someone hit him, than a bullet wound, then they go to sleep for the night.
If I need to, I would lie about what happened, to make it sound more believable.
Chapter 14
Henry sleeps good that night, but wakes up to the sound of battle, and sees men lying around him, he thinks they are corpses because he does not remember where he is. He remembers, and Wilson greets him happily. Henry reacts angrily because of his head injury. Henry notes how Wilson has changed from a Loud person, to a caring soldier. Henry tells him that Jim Conklin is dead, and Wilson is sad about this news. While they are talking, 3 soldiers get into an arguement, Wilson tries to calm them down, and Henry mentions how much Wilson has changed.
I could act like this sometimes when I talk to someone when I'm not feeling good, or have an injury, like Henry.
Chapter 15
The Regiment begins to move out, Henry and Wilson march together, Then Henry realises he still has the letter Wilson gave him when Wilson thought he was going to die in battle. He decides not to tell Wilson he still has them, he could use them to ignore any question Wilson asks him about his head. Henry starts to feel good about his previous behavior, saying his retreat was heroic, and theirs was tragic. Wilson asks for his letter back and Henry gives them back without any hesitation, he thinks of himself as a hero, and looks forward to coming home to tell everyone about the war.
I can relate to this because I could use something I have to defend myself against anything someone else says to me that I don't like.
