chapter summaries and connection by Bryce Powers.

In this chapter you meet Henry, the main character. He is with his group of soldiers and they are preparing for battle. He is worried he will be the only coward and run away from war. He makes a joke and the “tall soldier” does not find it funny. He also remembers his mother’s words when he left for war “ do not go to war and die”.
Chapter 1
I can relate to this in an odd way. A lot of times in life people will like they are the only one feeling a certain way, and most of the time they aren’t. For instance say you don't like the “popular kid” because he is mean to people, well other people might be thinking the same way but not say anything because they want to “fit in”.
Chapter 2
They don't head for battle yet, so Henry has more days to debate if he is a coward or not. They are bored so people are smoking and stroking beards. Once they head out, a soldier tries to steal a horse, but a young girl gets it back. Once again henry asks about running, and he once again doesn’t get the answer he wants.
Everyone needs time to think. Even if that thinking is negative towards yourself. I can relate to henry because he was basically asking himself who he was, and who he was going to be.
Chapter 3
In this chapter, Henry has crazy mood swings. His thoughts are all over the place, as he sees people running, and even dying. His mood swings even him to thinking it would be better if he just died.
I can relate to this in one main way, I am a teen. As a teen I am always getting crazy thoughts, and even irrational thoughts. Mood swings are huge too, even though I rarely get those.
Chapter 4
They are almost in battle, as groups in front of them are in the thick of it. Smoke is everywhere and it is hard to see. Henry’s lieutenant gets shot, and Henry, once again, begins to start doubting himself.
In life it is always so easy to doubt yourself in any circumstance. One thing Henry needs to learn, and I think all of us do too, is that we are far more capable than we could have ever imagined, and if we doubt ourselves we put limits to our limitless lives.

Chapter 5
Henry acts like a mad man, and his adrenaline takes over his body. He just starts fighting crazily, and he even surprises himself. Other stuff happens, like people try to run, others are getting shot and wounded, but the main focus on this chapter is how Henry was unstoppable in this fight.
As I stated in the last chapter, Henry should have never doubted himself, as he was fine. In life we should never doubt ourselves, and we will be amazed at what we can do.

Chapter 6
In this chapter it seems all his adrenaline is used up, as in this fight he runs away “like a rabbit. He is nothing like he was the first battle, and he is just scared because of how accurate the confederates are.
This chapter shows that, no one is unstoppable, and we all will have our downfalls. After all, Henry is a just a kid, but most importantly he is a human. Humans are not perfect, and nor will they ever be.
Chapter 7
The union somehow one and Henry walks back trying to make himeself feel better then doesn't when he sees a dead man.
Often we lie to ourselves to make our sleves feel better about what we did, that way we don't feel guilty, yet it never works.

Chaper 8
More battles break out as Hnery heads back and he sees dead people everywhere, and he is frighntened by this. He is creeped out and avoids all injured soldiers.
In life we may be inexpeirenced in certain sutuations and might not know how to deal with it properly.

Chapter 9
He is nervous that they will figure out what he did ebcause he doesn't have a woud on him. He is raging because of the battles and his friends are dying from it.
We all feel guilty at times when we know we might get aught for something we did. also in life peoples moods can change very quickly ruining a day, or making it great.

Chapter 10
The tattered soldier is on to Henry trying to find his wound, so then Henry does somehting terrible and leaves the tattered soldier to die and fend for himself.
We do terrible things in life when we are trying to cover up a lie or something we did wrong, and in this case it led to someone dying.

Chapter 11
Henry is being torn apart by emotions, one second he's brave, and the next moment he is scared to death, and even left feeling suicidal.
Life can be very difficult for people leaving them unsure about hwo to feel. As a teen mood swings are common and can make you happy one second mad the other, in vise versa.

Chapter 12
Evryone starts running back at him and he no idea as to what is going on. In panick he grabs someone and tries to figure out has happened, then the soldier panics and hit him in the head leaving him clueless and wounded until he is saved by a random soldier.
Life will come at you in a flahs, and unexpected things will be thrown your way and you might not know how to deal with them, but you might get lucky and get a cheery soldier he saves and leads you on the right path again.

Chapter 13
Henry tells everyone that he was shot in the head and that is why he wasn't with the regiment. One thinks it is an odd wound and Henry sleeps poorly in guilt.
We sometimes lie in life to cover things we know we did wrong, and almost every time we later feel the guilt of what we did, knowing it was wrong.

Chapter 14
He wakes up to battles being faught. The tall soldier tells Hemr that Jim was dead, even though he already knew that, and regiments start fighting as people have been trickling back like Hnery did.
When scary and bad things in life are happening it can cause people to feel helpless emotionally and can turn friends agianst each other.
