What makes us Human? Almost everyone asks themselves this question at least once in their lives. First you think of the basics, such as the fact that humans can communicate. But you soon realize, many animals can communicate too. Are we really that special? Or are we just another stage in the evolution of apes? Many people think of this from a scientific point of view, but there’s more to being human than the eyes can see. Look at someone with a physical or mental disability, are they still human? Of course they are, without question! Then, you ask yourself, if it’s not just communication or having an superior intellect that makes us human, then what is it?
From the scientific point of view, Rob Brooks states, “The belief that there is something inherently special about humans and the way we arose is more suited to creation mythologies and religious doctrine than to a scientific, testable view of the world.” Although this may be accurate in some ways, it isn’t in others. Rob cannot prove nor disprove that God exists, because God can’t be detected with any kind of scientific tool. Humans are unique because, according to The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, “As early humans faced new environmental challenges and evolved bigger bodies, they evolved larger and more complex brains.” It is true that Humans have the most complex minds of any animal, but is that really what makes us human? Not all humans’ brains function properly, but they’re still human. This is talking about the average person, not everyone.
